Victorian President's Report

Tina King- APF Victorian President

The current teacher staffing shortages have reached high levels, significantly impacting many schools across the state. With increasing absences due to ill health as a result of seasonal colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses, teachers are more susceptible to these illnesses as a result of contact with students.

These shortages are having adverse impact upon teaching and learning as the collapsing of classes is making it difficult for teachers to provide individualised attention and effectively manage classrooms. The lack of specialised teachers means that some subjects are being taught by teachers outside their field of expertise, compromising the quality of education. Additionally, schools are increasingly relying on CRTs (if they can be sourced), which may not always ensure the same level of preparedness and effectiveness, ultimately having impact on the continuity of learning.

The burden on existing teachers is also intensifying, leading to additional workload burdens. This vicious cycle undermines the stability and continuity crucial for student success. Furthermore, extracurricular activities and specialised programs are often curtailed.

Managing winter seasonal absences is a challenge and at times like this it is important to prioritise programs and deliver on a critical needs basis.  Staff flexibility and co-operation is essential and with only a few weeks to go until the end of term, I know many of you are clearly focussed on the end of term date.
