Numeracy Challenge
Numeracy Challenge update:
Challenge 3: Numeracy in Literacy
If A=1, B=2, C=3…. Z=26.
Can you find a five-letter word which when the values of the letters are added makes a sum of 63.
The word cannot be a proper noun.
The last challenge was a hit, and it was pleasing to see many students and staff engaging with it. It was impressive how students were thinking out of box and justifying their answers.
Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing your responses for the next one.
The names of the respondents and their responses for Challenge 3 are as follows.
Ben Long-
Prisa: Spanish for “hurry” or “rush”. The rules do not explicitly say that foreign words are not allowed, only the submission of proper nouns. “Prisa” is not a proper noun in Spanish. P – 16, R – 18, I – 9, S – 19, A - 1

This is an anagram of "prisa" (a Spanish word) which Ben, Shaun and Roahn came up with. then nick realised that "pairs" and "Paris" were both anagrams of "prisa" however, "Paris" is a proper noun so "pairs" is a correct solution.

Hello! I have calculated that using the A1Z26 cipher, there are 355 possible solutions to this challenge. However, some of the answers are dubious, and a select few are inappropriate. Here are a few: - pairs, teens, tears, stain, sized, satin, ranks, crowd

We need to have a few large letters in it. After lots of testing, I found the word WITCH was 5 letters which reached 63. C = 3, H = 8, I = 9, T = 20, W = 23 3 + 8 + 9 + 20 + 23 = 63 WITCH
