We have been busy and working very hard in 3/4TG since our last newsletter.
NUMERACY
At the end of Term 3, we completed our Numeracy unit on ANGLES.
We are now able to name and categorise angles, measure angles and list the properties of angles. We are able to estimate angles and use a protractor to measure angles correctly.
If you walk past our classroom, you will see our angles poster display in the hallway.
Timothy K: I love angles! I am fascinated by how the world around us is made of them. I loved learning about the different angle names. I loved the activities in angles; we were able to use protractors.
Ava: There are many different angles: acute, obtuse, right, revolution, straight and reflex. Those are all the angles. We are learning how to measure angles using protractors.
Dylan: In class we made posters about angles and some angles are acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex and revolutions.
Seyon: Angles are my favourite topic in Maths. Maths is my favourite subject. Angles are measured in degrees. We used protractors to measure angles.
ENGLISH
Last term we linked our writing to our history topic of the First Fleet. We learned about the different fleets, number of convicts and the crimes they were sentenced for. We used diary entries to convey how child convicts were feeling during their voyage on the hulks and when they first arrived in Australia.
Timothy C: I enjoyed writing a diary entry because I got to write about the First Fleet and learn about the history at this time.
Toshika: I enjoyed writing my diary entries about a convict on a ship to Australia. We also learned about the different types of ships; one of them was called the Lady Penrhyn.
Mason: I liked learning about the First Fleet because it was so cool to learn about the history of Australia and England. I liked writing diary entries because I got to pretend to be a convict on the ship.
Hugo: For English lessons we learnt about diary entries, the First Fleet and well known Australian people who founded Australia. We also wrote about being in a conflict in the First Fleet or a day in the life of Captain James Cook; the first person who stepped foot on Australia who wasn’t an Aboriginal.
Noah: I enjoyed learning about the First Fleet and also learning about old prisoners and about Captain James Cook. I love learning about history and people in the old days succeeding on their mission and especially about boats and prisoners. I also enjoyed learning new words and their meanings. For example, I learnt about a convict who committed a big crime in the old days.
NARRATIVES
Our genre of writing at the moment is narratives. We have been learning about the structure and features of narratives. We had a focus this term on direct and indirect speech and are using this feature to extend our writing. After the editing process, we will post them on SEESAW so our families can read our stories.
Elise: At the start of Term 4, we have learnt about narratives and their structures. We have already started a narrative with a picture prompt of a girl and a dragon. My story is called ‘Lost and Found.’
Nysa: We wrote narratives about a dragon and a child. In my narrative the child’s name is Dory and the dragon’s name is Lory; they’re best friends.
Chiara and Elaria: We have been learning about the structure and features of a narrative. Some of the features of a narrative are: point of view, show not tell, similes and onomatopoeia. The structure of a narrative is: opening, build up, problem, resolution and conclusion.
Tony: In Term 4, we have learnt to use speech marks, similes, exaggeration, hyperbole and onomatopoeia/sound effects in narratives.
Sanuli: My narrative is about two friends getting injured while on an adventure. I’ve included speech marks, full stops and capital letters.
Sabrina: We wrote narratives and learnt onomatopoeia words like “Bang!” Thanks Mrs. Tracey and Mrs. Glancy because we learnt new things.
Valentina: I learnt a new thing in narrative writing. It is called onomatopoeia, it means sounds in words. Like “Bang” “Boom” “Thud”. If you read a comic book it will have an onomatopoeia to make it fun.
