Prep News

In MSL, students are learning the 'Sail Away' rule, where 'ai' spelling makes a long 'a' sound at the beginning or middle of a word, and 'ay' spelling makes the same sound at the end of a word.  We had fun playing and reading words with a friend from the other class.

Our Prep students are currently working on narrative writing. We are using an approach called 'Narrative Hill' to help them structure their stories. Developed by speech therapists, Narrative Hill focuses on key elements such as orientation, setting, characters, problem/feeling, and resolution. We are really pleased how this approach complements MSL and The Writing Revolution instruction. This prior knowledge has allowed the children to free up their working memory, enabling them to focus more on the structure of their writing.

In Maths, Preps are learning about grouping and sharing, as well as identifying odd and even numbers. They practiced this by playing our Odd Todd and Even Steven game.

In Topic, students are working on coding by creating algorithms to move Bee-Bots, developing their understanding of step-by-step instructions.

Year One News

Year One Camp 7/11 @4:45pm

In MSL, we are learning the, 'Eat Bread and Steak' rule, which focuses on the three sounds of 'ea.' These sounds include the long and short vowel sounds of 'e' and the long vowel sound of 'a.' We have also been learning the ‘Turtle Rule,’ which looks at the final syllable of words ending with a consonant + -le. This includes words like "purple," "circle," and "bumble."

In Writing, students are exploring narrative writing through the Narrative Hill. This includes starting with the orientation of a story, focusing on characters, settings, and the structure of events.

In Maths, students have been exploring data by looking at graphs and collecting data through surveys and observations. Students have also been learning about time, beginning with the days of the week, months of the year, and the length of the year. We have also begun learning to tell time using an analogue clock, focusing on the length of minutes and hours.

In Topic, students have loved learning about coding and building their understanding of algorithms and step-by-step instructions. They were thrilled to explore and code BeeBots around the classroom using commands like, "forward," "backward," and "turn."

Year Two

Year Two Sleepover 7/11 @4:45pm

In Maths, students explored arrays and worked on finding halves and quarters of a collection using counters.

On devices, they practiced their times tables on Numbots and Times Table Rockstars, which you can check out at home—your child knows how to log in and play. This practice is crucial for developing fluency in recalling mathematical facts.

While playing maths games, students focused on building fluency with the 3 and 5 times tables.

Using Bee-Bots, Year Two's programmed and coded the devices to follow specific algorithms, learning how to debug and solve coding problems along the way.

In an unplugged coding activity, students went outside with whiteboards and pretended to be robots, navigating each other from one place to another.
