Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan

Womin Djeka. Our commitment to the Marrung Aboriginal Education Plan remains strong and we have been chosen as a beacon school this year for how well we are moving in this space to support all key stakeholders.

Due to this, we have been invited to take part in a two year Koorie Curriculum Cluster program with exclusive access to Registered Aboriginal Parties and 11 other champion schools chosen from the state. This work has begun with an initial cluster day on Friday 16th August at the Koorie Heritage Trust where we shared stories of current progress and future planning.

Our Semester 2 Marrung Action Plan can now be viewed by our wider school community via the button below and really highlights student voice within our College.

Our first Marrung Working Party specifically addressing our current curriculum Years 7 - 12 and strengthening any opportunities/gaps will now meet to audit our current 7-10 curriculum.

Lastly, we are currently busy organising our first KELiS (Koorie Emerging Leaders in Schools) event in Term 4 where 80 Koorie students from 16 local Secondary Colleges will join us at Western Port for a day of culture and wellbeing. Our Western Port Mob Leaders are looking forward to this day.

Teaching and Learning

1:1 Staff Coaching

In the first five weeks, we've focused on 1:1 coaching sessions with all Year 11 teachers. The primary goal has been to build skills that shift student engagement from passive to active learning. Teachers are exploring techniques to make their lessons more interactive and are already seeing positive changes in student participation.

Peer Observations

The pilot group for Peer Observations has successfully begun. Teachers are observing each other’s practices, allowing for shared learning experiences and collaborative growth. Early feedback indicates that this approach is fostering a supportive environment where staff can openly discuss and refine their methods.

Instructional Skills Observations

Our observations centered around the five focus teaching skills; With-It-Ness, Cold Calling, Cue to Action, Positive Narration, and Process Praise are gaining valuable feedback. Teachers are integrating these skills into their lessons well and the consistent use of these techniques is enhancing classroom dynamics and student responses.

Practice Meetings

The Practice meetings have been a critical space for refining the observation process. We've concentrated on improving how feedback is delivered and received while also expanding the teacher toolkit. This ongoing professional development is building staff capacity and confidence in implementing innovative teaching strategies.

Overall, these initiatives are laying a strong foundation for continued growth and improvement across the school

I look forward to sharing our next update at the end of this term.

Kind Regards,

Brooke Roy
