On Monday 19th August the college will publish the first reporting set for Semester Two 2024. This report is part of our continuous Reporting Cycle which shares a snapshot of the Achievement and Work Practices, along with an indication of how students are progressing with Key Skills and Knowledge. This is the first time the college will include Formative Assessment results into the reports for Years 7-10. Formative Assessment ratings are based on several in class assessments teacher use to check for understanding of students. At the time of writing the reports, the teacher makes a determination on whether the student is on track for the age-appropriate Victorian Curriculum value using the scale below.

This is a mid-point check in and is an indication of what the teacher has seen so far.

Above or At the standard – students have demonstrated evidence of the learning and skills being taught and the teacher believes they are on track for the age-appropriate value, or higher at the end of the unit. Below the standard – students have demonstrated skills that are indicating the student is not on track to meet the age-appropriate value. This may be an indication of low skill level demonstration, with or without growth. They are not on track to meet the age expected level. Not Assessed – students have not participated in adequate learning activities for the teacher to determine accurate skills and knowledge. These students are significantly at risk in that subject.

Literacy Update – Years 7 & 8 LEAP

Vanessa Dennis - Western Port Learning Guarantee Leader

LEAP is a literacy intervention subject that primarily focusses on building students reading skills. Students read texts in LEAP that connect to topics they are exploring in other subjects. For example, in term 3 English, Year 8s are reading the text The Silver Donkey which is set during World War I, while Year 7s are reading the text Kensuke’s Kingdom set in the aftermath of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

As August 6th is Hiroshima Day (or in some places called Peace Day), due to it being the anniversary of the Allied bombings of Hiroshima in World War II, we decided to do a cross curricular hands-on activity with our LEAP students. To recognise this important anniversary and link it to our learning in English classes, our 7&8 LEAP students read the famous story of 'Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes' by Eleanor Coerr, and then tried to make their own paper cranes with origami paper.

Even with the help of paper instruction guides, YouTube clips, and our tutors that just happened to have origami skills (Ms Ashton, Ms Butler, Mr Eklund, Ms Garnier, and Ms Lark and our ES staff Ms Eliason) making paper cranes were a huge challenge for many of our students!

There were lots of examples of resourcefulness, working together, persistence, applying feedback and resilience demonstrated in this activity - our LEAP students certainly rose to the occasion. Our aim next year is to make enough high-quality cranes to be able to send them to Hiroshima to join the other cranes sent from around the world to adorn Sadako's peace statue in the Memorial Park. Thank you for your fabulous work, LEAPers!

Curriculum (Years 7 - 10)

Alison Dowler - Learning Specialist

As we approach the midpoint of the year, we're excited to share the latest curriculum updates across Years 7-10. Students have now completed their term 2 summative assessment period towards the end of term which provides a structured approach to evaluating student progress in each of their subjects. This assessment period is followed by Feedback Week allocated in the last week of term where students receive constructive feedback from their teachers on their learning tasks to enhance their learning and provide them targeted feedback moving forward.
