Student Growth & Merits Award

Student Merits are awarded by teachers to students who go above and beyond to demonstrate the Brentwood values for learning and community. Each teacher can give out two merits every week to two students across all their classes. Every term ten students from each year level who received a Merit are randomly selected to receive a special prize in the form of a gift voucher. The more Merits students receive each term, the more chances they have to receive a gift voucher.

To celebrate the students from each year level and House who received the most Merits in Semester One, a celebratory morning tea was held on the15th of July. Parents and guardians were invited to join the celebration with the Heads of House and Principal Class. Another morning tea will be held in Term 4 to celebrate the recipients of the most Merits for Semester Two.

The teaching staff, Principal Class, and House Hub Team would like to offer a huge congratulations to all students who have received Merits this year, and have been actively upholding and demonstrating the Brentwood values for learning and community.

AGTV GERMAN POETRY COMPETITION – Student Reflections

My name is Vihaan, and I am a German student in year 7. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to go to the AGTV German Poetry competition. There was an auditioning process to get into the competition which involved reciting the poem we had been learning in German class. Four year 7’s and four year 8’s got selected.

Soon, the big day came, and after meeting up in the TLC, we set off to Mount Waverly Secondary College, where the competition was being held. We went there by public transport. When we arrived, we listened to a presentation by one of the German teachers there and the German language captain. We were then split up by our year levels and put into separate rooms. Most of us were really nervous about saying our poems in front of the two judges, but they were really nice (and gave everyone candy!). It was our turn first, and we recited our poems in front of the judges. Mount Waverley’s students had their turn next, and they did really good. There were also students from Box Hill High School, but they didn’t have any year 7’s. After eating our snacks, there was a fun German trivia event with all the students.

Then we came back to the presentation room and the winners were announced. I’m very happy to report that Gurnoor Bhatia from year 7 received 3rd prize and Adrina Hosseinpour from year 8 got 1st prize! Then everyone went outside to take a few photos, had some snacks, and we began the journey back to Brentwood. We arrived back just in time for lunch and period 5. All in all, it was a great experience, and I hope we can participate next year as well!

The German poetry competition was a day I had eagerly anticipated, and it turned out to be even more exciting than I imagined. I was overjoyed to be selected. For the journey there, we went by two buses, and we practiced our poem once. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a presentation that outlined the day ahead, setting the stage for what was to come. The Year 7, 8, and 9 students were then divided into different rooms, and all though I felt nervous about reading my poem in front of others, the unwavering support from my friends gave me the courage I needed. Listening to the students from Mount Waverly SC was inspiring; their confidence and eloquence were truly impressive. My friends performed wonderfully as well, and I was thrilled when Gurnoor, one of my friends, secured third place in our year group. The return journey was equally memorable, as we travelled by train and bus, reflecting on the incredible experience we had just shared. The German poetry competition was an unforgettable event, made even better by the kindness and friendliness of the students and teachers from the other schools. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to participate!
