Year Nine

Humanities

In Year 9 Humanities, we have undertaken a detailed study of World War One, aiming to provide a thorough understanding of its causes, impacts, and significant aspects. Our exploration began with the origins of the war, including the complex interplay of political alliances, nationalism, and militarism that led to the conflict. By analysing primary documents such as soldiers' diaries, we gained personal insights into the experiences of those on the frontlines. We also examined the role of technological advancements, such as machine guns and tanks, which fundamentally changed warfare strategies.

Our study extended to the Homefront, where we explored how societies adapted to wartime conditions and their impact on everyday life. We investigated the use of propaganda to shape public opinion and maintain morale during the war. Additionally, we delved into key battles, such as the Battle of the Somme and Verdun, and examined the harsh conditions soldiers faced in trench warfare. This comprehensive approach aimed to give us a well-rounded perspective on World War One, highlighting its profound effects on individuals and societies alike.

Visual Communications

In our recent Visual Communications project, students embarked on an exciting advertising journey, applying weeks of dedicated effort to bring their creative visions to life. Each student was assigned a product and given a comprehensive brief, challenging them to develop an innovative concept. Through this process, they created compelling still visual media, incorporating various elements such as imagery, typography, and design. The project honed their technical skills and encouraged them to think critically about visual storytelling and effective communication in advertising.

Chris Kim and Jazz Williams created the following piece.

Financial Literacy

Over the last few weeks, students have continued exploring the concept of financial literacy and further building their understanding of money and its role in society. As a group, we inquired about how money was once tied to the gold standard but has now transitioned into being tagged as a 'fiat currency' and how inflationary measures have eroded purchasing power over time. We researched the 'Big Mac Index' and why the costs of items may vary from country to country due to purchasing power.

In the following two weeks, we investigated salaries and linked the results from the students' Morrisby testing from the start of the year to the potential salary that may come with that career. Students related how the skill and the demand for that career affected the wage attached to that occupation.

This week, we explored how the Australian tax system operated and how the progressive tax brackets differentiated the amount of tax a person had to pay based on their income. As a group, we debated the ethical connotations of a progressive tax system and whether a proportional (flat) tax was considered more advantageous and fair.

We are heading into another exciting couple of weeks, as our next topic will be focussing on housing expenses. We will analyse the factors that affect the cost of houses and the underlying behind-the-scenes costs that may be associated with home ownership. Following that, we'll look at the current rental situation facing the general population while analysing the pros and cons of renting versus buying property.

Music

Exciting Developments in Our Instrumental Music Program!

Our instrumental music program is thriving like never before! We are delighted to share that student participation has reached near capacity, with only a few spots remaining. This overwhelming response reflects the enthusiasm and passion our students have for music.

One of the standout achievements this term is forming our very own Saltwater Band. This talented group of students has been working incredibly hard, and their dedication is paying off. We are excited to announce that the Saltwater Band will be giving their first performance in Week 8. This event promises to be a memorable showcase of their skills and creativity, and we thank everyone in the saltwater community for their ongoing support.

If your child is interested in joining our instrumental music program, now is the time to act! We have limited spots left and even a waiting list for some instruments. To secure a place, please ensure that you submit your forms as soon as possible.

We are committed to providing an enriching musical experience for our students, and we look forward to continuing this journey with all of our young musicians. I appreciate your support in making our instrumental music program a success.
