Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

Reading

In Reading, our students have been diving into the world of Non-Fiction books. They are learning about the importance of text features such as illustrations, photographs, captions, headings, and subheadings, which help them better understand the information presented. They’ve also been working on understanding phonemes, the smallest units of sound in a word. By substituting one phoneme for another, they are discovering how words can change, for example, “mum” becomes “fun.” Additionally, we’ve been exploring the "sh" digraph to enhance our reading skills. Students also continued to participate in reading groups once a week with their teacher, using shared texts to work on individual reading goals and decoding strategies.

Writing

In Writing, the students had an exciting time crafting a procedure for diving after watching some thrilling diving performances in the Olympics. They carefully observed the steps involved, translated their observations into pictures with labels, and then completed a clear, step-by-step procedural piece of writing.

Maths

In Mathematics our students focused on division, where students learned various strategies to solve division problems independently. As part of their hands-on learning, they completed a division sunflower craft, applying their new knowledge creatively.

Inquiry

For Inquiry, students have been using the See, Think, Wonder Board to explore how Point Cook has changed over time. They’ve been comparing the past to the present, documenting their observations and thoughts, and deepening their understanding of the local area’s history and development.
