Year 3 News
From Sally-Jean, Year 3 teacher
In the Kitchen
Alongside Book Week celebrations, Athletics Day, and Wear It Purple Day, Year 3 have also managed to continue their kitchen garden program. This week we have put our skills to good use to make a very delicious Spiced Pumpkin Loaf.
In teams of 4 or 5, the students worked together to first mash the pumpkin, mixing it with maple syrup, egg replacer and olive oil. They combined the flour, with a mixture of spices, including cloves and cinnamon. They then ground fresh nutmeg, ensuring their fingers were tucked in just as we have been learning in knife safety.
Instructional texts
The kitchen garden program has proven a wonderful opportunity for students to work collaboratively in small groups, share ideas and expertise, and work with peers we not usually work with. The program also ties in with our current focus in Writing at the moment which has been looking at Instructional texts. When reading through the recipe, the students were able to point out the imperative verbs, including mix, pour, stir and mash. It is always good to see students transferring their skills from one subject to another.
Thank you to Sylvia Hungria who is this week's parent volunteer! Your help is very much appreciated Sylvia!
