Around the School

Highlights this week

Science celebrates, donates

During Science Week, our intention was to not only raise awareness but actively support its theme of "Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability" in keeping with the school's theme of "respecting the environment".

It is with that in mind, that I am pleased to announce that $100 has been donated to Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, thanks to the generosity of our St George's families, St George's staff and the Science Department - each contributing towards that important total. Thankyou.

If you would like to know more about Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and how the money can help, you can visit the website: https://www.kanyanawildlife.org.au/. Equally, why not consider a family outing there, like one of our lucky Marionette Puppet prize winners later this year!

Holiday idea - Underwater Wonders with Mr Heath

“Underwater Wonders” is a school holiday event I’m facilitating with one of the DBCA invertebrate marine scientists at Iluka Beach next Wednesday 25 September. We will be conducting quadrat sampling in the Marmion Marine Park at an intertidal platform during low tide, and it will be a great hands-on experience for students interested in doing marine biology and meeting scientists!

The bookings have been open for a week, but we haven’t had many bites yet.

I’m hoping you can please share this information with your classes or interested students and we can get more teens out on the beach with us, doing real science!

Respect for the Environment

Rev Hollis Wilson, Minister of the Uniting Church on William Street, was joined by a select group of St George's Anglican Grammar School Year 10 students to make a public statement about the need to ensure no one is left behind in a future jobs market that will include clean energy. The students are passionate about a responsibly sustainable future and this action links to our current Year 10 Unit called Christianity and the Environment.

Rocks and mining

A big haul of 30 samples of rocks, from near and far, were brought into the school for the Year 8s to identify. The Australian Earth Science Education Centre hosted an incursion in which students used lenses to determine the characteristics of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks. This classification is essential for geologists – and fun for our Science students.

Art showcase taking shape

This year’s Art Exhibition promises to be spectacular with some outstanding and thought-provoking Year 12 pieces from both ATAR and APEx students including: painting, textiles, sculpture and wearable art.

The Year 7 & 8 Art students are excited to share their paintings and ceramics with an environmental theme.

The Year 9s will bring us a scrumptious display of Adriano Zumba meets Barbie props themed edibles.

The Year 10 Art students are busy putting the finishing touches to their fabulous skateboards as I write, and the 11 ATAR and APEx students' ceramics are in the kiln being fired for display. The Design students are also working hard to show their portfolios and creative photographs.

Save the date and do come along to support our budding artist. The official opening is on 22 October.

See you there.

Ms Carol Wohlnick

Head of the Arts

 Toy story

Our Year 10 Design students have enjoyed giving unwanted toys a new identity – by repurposing and combining elements of toys into an original design.

They were tasks with naming their toy and researching toy designers to inform their presentations. This week they designed their original packaging, considering important elements such as sustainability.
