Gimmel Camp

Written by Mr. Joel

Our recent camp to Canberra was an amazing trip, filled with a huge range of activities and fun experiences. Here’s a quick recap.

Monday: Arrival and Rock Climbing

After a long but smooth journey to Canberra, we kicked off our adventure with an exhilarating rock-climbing session. The climb was a fantastic way to stretch our legs and build camaraderie among students. It set an energetic tone for the exciting days ahead!

Tuesday: Immersive Historical and Educational Experiences

Tuesday was packed with important educational visits. Dressed in our MCC best, we began the day at the Australian War Memorial, where students participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The day continued with insightful Q&A sessions with our local Member of Parliament, Anne Webster, and an American Army Veteran, and then a tour of the memorial. Our only wish is that we got to spend more time here! Later, we toured Parliament House and engaged in an enlightening education program that gave us a behind-the-scenes look at our government. We then visited Questacon, where hands-on exhibits sparked curiosity and learning through interactive science displays. Our day concluded with another informative program at the National Education and Employment Centre (NEEC), rounding off a day rich in knowledge and exploration.

Wednesday: Museums, Zoos, and Miniature Wonders

Our Wednesday adventure began at the Museum of Australian Democracy, where we explored the history of Australian governance and democratic values and sat in the original senate chamber.  Next, we visited the Australian Zoo and Aquarium, delighting in encounters with native wildlife and marine creatures. Following the zoo, we wandered through Cockington Green, marvelling at the intricate miniature villages. The day ended with a visit to the Dinosaur Museum, where students were thrilled to see impressive fossil displays and learn about prehistoric life.

Thursday: Outdoor Fun and Evening Entertainment

On Thursday, we spent the morning at Corin Forest. We spent hours playing in the snow and racing down the giant alpine slide. The frosty fun provided a perfect contrast to our previous days of indoor activities. In the evening, we enjoyed some thrilling go-kart racing and friendly competition at mini golf. The playful atmosphere was a hit with everyone, providing a perfect ending to our trip.

Special Thanks

A special shout-out goes to our bus driver, Rodney. He was not only an excellent driver, but also an entertaining and knowledgeable tour guide. His humour and insights added an extra layer of enjoyment to our trip.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $112.50 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. We gratefully acknowledge the Government's contribution.

Overall, our Canberra excursion was a fantastic blend of learning, adventure, and fun. Students returned with enriched knowledge, wonderful memories, and a newfound appreciation for our nation's history and government. We look forward to more trips filled with discovery and excitement in the future!
