From the Principal

Hello everyone,

The end of the year is fast approaching with our Year 12 VCE-ATAR students finishing their exams whilst students in Year 10-11 begin their exams. Students in Year 7-9 have completed their PAT testing. PAT assessments are used to measure what students know, understand and are capable of in the areas of Maths and Literacy.

Fast Forward will begin 27th November. All students currently in Year 7-11 will begin the 2024 school year. There is always an air of excitement and positivity. Students look forward to new subjects, new teachers, and new friends. Staff too, look forward to teaching new students and getting to know their abilities.

Many students enrolled in Year 7 2024, sat for one of five scholarships. The successful students will begin life in Year 7 with a bursary of $350. This may be used for all things educational. I am pleased to announce the 5 recipients came from Osborne Primary School, Tyabb Primary School, Bentons Junior College, Seaford Primary School and St. Brendan’s Primary School. Well done everyone.

This morning I was also informed one of our Year 10 students was successful in gaining a place in the University of Melbourne, Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program. University of Melbourne received close to 2000 applications, addressing their academic performance and community involvement and Mornington Secondary College was successful. Congratulations to the young person who will be notified shortly by Melbourne University.

Have a wonderful week.

Middle School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is nearly that time of the year when our students advance to the next year level and begin the academic year early. We call it Fast Forward. The early start is designed to allow students to ease into the learning environment and to provide opportunities for students to feel connected and organised to successfully engage in their 2024 academic studies.

Of course, the Fast Forward transition involves moving lockers, moving into different rooms, and having new teachers and coordinators. It certainly reenergises the entire college as we aim to maximise instructional time and set academic goals across the year levels.  For our Year 8 students moving into Year 9, it is very exciting as they engage in elective subjects (for the first time) in addition to their core subjects.

We look forward to a fantastic Fast Forward commencing on 27 November.

Please look below this segment for the Maths Challenge and information regarding the PAT testing.

Wishing you a great week.

Middle School Assistant Principal

The Maths Department led by Tracey Watchorn have scheduled PAT testing in Numeracy for Years 7 - 9 for Wednesday 22 November.

A REMINDER FOR ALL STUDENTS TO BRING A CHARGED LAPTOP.

We are looking forward to building on the successes from mid-year. The Maths team have been continuously working with Margarita Breed Maths consultant in scaffolding numeracy in the middle years in identifying and refining a learning and assessment framework for the development of multiplicative thinking using rich learning tasks.

Currently, students are undertaking their Maths exams and should be commended on their study, preparation and showing a growth mindset to improve in their maths.

Senior School

Dear Mornington Secondary College parents of our intrepid current and future VCE students,

As we embark on an exciting academic year, we extend a warm invitation to all parents of VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) students to join us for our upcoming VCE Launch Night. This event is designed to provide you with valuable insights and resources to support your child's journey through the challenges and triumphs of VCE.

VCE Launch Night for 2024

- Monday 27th November

- Arrive at 5:45pm for a sausage and a 6:00pm start. We should be finished by 7pm.

- Presentation will be in the Performing Arts Centre

Agenda for the program:

Understanding the VCE Landscape:

We'll kick off the evening with an overview of the VCE program, explaining its structure, expectations, and the significance of this critical academic phase.

Decoding Key Terms:

Navigating the world of VCE can sometimes feel like deciphering a complex code. Our experienced educators will decode key terms and terminology, ensuring you have a solid grasp on the language used throughout your child's VCE journey.

Supports for you and your child:

Learn about the various academic and wellbeing monitoring and support systems in place to assist both students and parents. From study resources to counselling services, we're committed to fostering an environment that nurtures the holistic development of each individual student.

Interactive Q&A Session:

Following the presentations, we'll open the floor for a Q&A session. This is your opportunity to seek clarification, share concerns, and engage in a constructive dialogue with the VCE team.

Why Attend?

- Gain a more comprehensive understanding of the VCE program and the things that really matter.

- Equip yourself with the knowledge to support your child's academic endeavours.

- Connect with other VCE parents and build a supportive community.

- Ask the questions you really want to know.

At Mornington Secondary College, we believe in the power of collaboration between parents, students, and educators. Your presence at the VCE Launch Night is not only encouraged but highly valued. We look forward to your participation and to collectively fostering a positive and enriching VCE experience for our students. See you at 5:45 for a sausage!

Kind regards,

One week to go…

School is a hive of activity at the moment as students sit exams and finalise their 2023 performance tasks.

That’s right its one week to go until fast forward, the start of our 2024 academic year.  Student have been emailed their 2024 subjects and next week they will learn who their teachers will be.

Fast Forward is an exciting time for everyone at school as it gives everyone a fresh start with new classes and a sense of optimism about the year to come.  There is a real opportunity for families to have a conversation with their kids around how their year has gone. What things should they keep doing, what things might need a tweak and what things need a major overhaul.

Students are the key component of their own success, as a College we believe that everyone can be successful and we will start this years Fast Forward really pushing high expectations for learning for all students.

Can’t wait to get started!

Kind regards,

Mike Parker

Assistant Principal

Year 10 Environmental and Marine Science

Last week the Year 10 Environmental and Marine Science students headed out on Port Phillip Bay with Polperro Dolphin Swim tours for a morning of marine adventures. Students swam with seals, sting rays and dolphins for a first hand experience of our endemic marine life and to get a taste for what a career in the environmental/marine field might entail.

This concluded the semester based subject which looked at the Earth and its oceans, the science of sea water, classification of marine organisms, nutrient cycles that support life and the environmental challenges that face our planet.

Thursday - Hands on Learning Group

This semester our Thursday Hands on Learning Group have been extremely busy building a front fence and rear retaining wall/fence at the cottage. Well done to everyone involved!

Sporting Excellence

Congratulations to Andrew Turver of Year 10 who competed at the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships on October 28 at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

Andrew competed in the under 17 boys 2km steeplechase against some of the best National private school runners and placed in 3rd position.

Well done on such an outstanding result Andrew- we are all so proud of you and all of your achievements on the track this year!

Year 10 and 11 Exams

Exams have now arrived us and both year levels have started in a positive manner. Year 10 and 11 students who miss exams will have them rescheduled during the exam period. The respective year level teams will re-schedule them. All Year 10 and 11 students are expected to complete each exam unless they have been given an exemption by the Senior School Assistant Principal, Mr Evans.

The Year 10 team will hold a final assembly and celebration after their final exams on the 23rd of November before they become Year 11 students on the 27th November.

Year 12

Mr Scott Kirkby

On Tuesday 14th of November at 5:15pm, every student in VCE ATAR had completed their exams. That formally concludes the year for all members of the class of 2023. As I mentioned at the Valedictory evening, it has been a great honour to guide the class of 2023 through to the conclusion of their schooling. I would like to thank Victoria Milner and Evangeline Romage for their tremendous work as coordinators for the year level.

We now await the release of VCE results on December the 11th. For information regarding access to results, please click this link VCAA FAQ’s. Our pathways team (careers@mornsc.vic.edu.au ) will be on hand during the change of course preference window (closes on Dec 13th at 4pm) for students who wish to change their preferences after receiving their ATAR. We are proud of our students and their ATAR does not define them. The Year 12 team is available to share successes and support pivots in preferences and discuss new goals with all our students.

All the best to the Class of 2023 from the Year 12 Team.
