Literacy

In preparation for writing letters to our Pen pal schools, the Preps listened to the story Dragon Post. This book provided the springboard to discuss the purpose of letter writing and why people write and receive letters. The students wrote a postcard to Alex about his dragon. The Preps were encouraged to independently write a simple sentence using the sentence structures we have been using in class. In a few weeks, we will write letters and a random act of kindness to other schools and hopefully receive 'mail' in return. During InitiaLit the students have been writing sentences that contain Tricky Words and practising to spell and write simple words using their letter sound knowledge. 

Maths 

The Preps use their eyes to see the total number of a collection without using their fingers to count. They have participated in Dot Talks, explaining to each other how they have seen the total number of a collection of dots. Some students used pictures of the dots to explain their reasoning and how they see numbers within a collection. 

This week the students have been exploring the concept of fair and equal. The following question was posed to the students;

Make the number of cakes on each plate equal (without removing any cakes from the left-hand plate). 

Throughout the week the students engaged in similar activities and shared their reasoning. 

Sustainability Fair 

The Preps were enthusiastic participants at the Sustainability Fair last week by the students from Monash University. It was wonderful to see the Preps showing confidence and respect when engaging with the students and the activities. They asked some great questions to gain more information about the specific area of sustainability. 

Inquiry 

This term in Inquiry we are exploring the properties of different materials. The students observed the changes that occur when making play dough. They discussed the properties of the materials or ingredients and then how the properties of the materials changed. We discovered that oil and water do not mix. This week each Prep created a goat from playdough and other craft materials. In a few days, the Preps will craft a boat from aluminium foil and then try to float a boat with their goat.
