Student Engagement - Lunchtime Activities
Today begins our first of a series of articles dedicated to how we promote inclusion and student engagement at Skye PS. This week's edition focuses on lunchtime activities.
Structured and organised activites at lunchtime form a powerful part of our whole-school strategy to support social inclusion and wellbeing. They help build student engagement and social skills for all students and have been proven to reduce bullying and playground behaviour incidents.
Please remind your child of the various activities on offer and encourage them give one (or more!) a try.
Lunchtime Clubs
A variety of lunchtime clubs run everyday during the first half of lunch play. As you can see there is something for everyone!
Play Leaders
A number of of Year 6 students have been trained in the Play Leader program. They lead a series of games specifically designed for Prep-Year 2 students in the gym two dyas a week. A classroom teacher provides supervision.
Not only does the play leader program provide a structured activity for our younger students, it also gives responsibility and a sense of purpose to our Year 6 students.
Peacemakers
Peacemakers is a new initiative at Skye this year. In Term One, 20 Year 6 students participated in a 1-day training regarding solving minor disputes in the yard. The training involved acting out typical playground scenarios and provided the students with question prompts and possible solutions.
The Peacemakers are rostered daily at both recess and lunch. They work in pairs and are available to assist students who are having minor disputes e.g. 'He won't let me play with them'. If a resolution can't be found the Peacemakers enlist the yard duty teacher for assistance. Again, this is an additional opportunity for responsibility for our Year 6 students while also promoting a variety of support options for children in the yard.
Look for the students in the green vests!
