Hello Grade 6 Families and Friends and welcome to the second Connect for the term!
We're well into the swing of the term and now that we have hit May, we have camp in our sights! (Click on the link to see all about it!) Please return the medical forms as soon as you can, if you haven't done so already. I've been on too many school camps in my time as a teacher and I can honestly say that this one is one of the best. The experiences and confidence that your child will benefit from is invaluable. Please check out their website....

But in the meantime we've goal plenty of goals to kick in and around the classroom!
All classes have had their Kitchen Garden session to start the term. 6A and 5/6C made sumptuous gnocchi with a radish salad and 6B made a huge amount of ANZAC biscuits that were absolutely lovely. We are so lucky to have Kitchen Garden as part of curriculum and absolutely blessed to have the amazing Mrs Furlong running it. As the next generation is moving down the path of relying on UberEats to feed them, it is nice to know that the students of Skye Primary School will have plenty of basic kitchen techniques that they will be able to use to cook healthier, fresher, and MUCH CHEAPER food. The students also enjoy getting out in the garden, maintaining, planting and harvesting the freshest of fruit, vegetables and herbs. Again, what a wonderful life skill for them to have!
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM!
Maths
We are still identifying patterns in number and they are getting far more complex and challenging. In some instances, Mr. Keenan's dodgy 'number patterns' have no pattern at all! All of these experiences have put our brains to the test. We are looking at Order of Operations too. You might remember BODMAS/ BIDMAS from your school days?
Literacy
We are still doing amazingly well with our reading in small groups. It is very impressive to see the students increase their fluency and confidence at reading aloud. The accompanying tasks that they have completed have increased their depth of understanding.
And The Princess Bride! What a finish to a story that none of the students will ever forget. And as a celebration and a comparison to the book we will be watching the movie as part of our visual literacy.
The students have been working so well on the whole that we decided that it was a nice way to reward them for all of their hard work. At the time of writing, the students have been regaling me with the snacks that they are going to bring in. A lolly salad? Hmmmm!
Inquiry
Australia's history dates back to antiquity with the first nations people caring for and belonging to this ancient land for over 50,000 years. We are focusing on the positive and negative impact that European settlement has had in such a relatively short amount of time. From the time that Captain Arthur Phillip set foot on Sydney Cove in 1788 there have been many key figures and incidents that have had a profound effect on the course that Australia is now on. We have been also influenced by world events such as wars, that have required some very difficult decisions by our elected leaders. We will be working in pairs to research key figures and key events and sharing these finding with our class and we will be placing these on a timeline.
Until next time we Connect, all the very best from 6A, 6B and 5/6 C!
