The Next Fortnight of Learning

Literacy

In the next two weeks students will continue their text study of Roald Dahl's novel The BGF. Practising their book club roles to develop comprehension strategies in their reading groups. In writing students will be engaged in drafting, editing and publishing their own memoir texts. Students will use the maps of their own personal experiences and memories in their writer's notebook to inspire their writing. We will refer back to our study of Remembering Lionsville and Where the Water Meets the Sea to reinforce expectations for text structure and language.

Maths

In Maths we are continuing our focus on fractions and decimals. We will explore strategies for finding equivalent fractions and comparing to see which is larger. In coming weeks students will build upon their place value knowledge by extending to decimals, as we learn to read and order decimal numbers correctly.

Inquiry

As part of this term's inquiry unit titled, 'Making Democracy' students will be learning about the three levels of government in Australia. They will explore the various roles and responsibilities of each level of government and investigate why our system of government is organised this way. Students will also spend time learning about elections in Australia and the preferential voting system. They will unpack the term 'majority' and participate in a mock ballot to help understand how decisions are made in parliament and representatives are chosen when elections are held.

Wellbeing

Over the next two weeks in Wellbeing students will be learning to identify scenarios we might face in our everyday life that we can resolve ourselves, with a friend or seek help from a trusted adult. The learning will encourage students to build resilience and celebrate their ability to solve everyday problems independently.

5/6 Hoop-time

Any students wishing to participate in this years 5/6 Hoop-time competition can register interest by completing the form sent out this week via Sentral. This year our Hoop-time competition will be held on Thursday the 6th of June at Frankston Basketball Stadium.

We are hoping to take as many teams as possible again this year and encourage anyone to get involved no matter how much basketball experience you have previously.

Celebration of Learning

Fraction, Who am I?

As part of our maths learning this week students played a warm up game of Fraction, Who am I? Students were each given a fraction that they could not see and placed it on their forehead. Their task was to then try and discover their fraction by asking yes or no questions to their classmates. Some helpful questions the students thought of included;

Am I an improper / proper fraction?

Am I more / less than a whole?

Is my numerator less than or more than ...

Is my denominator less than or more than...

Measurement - Liquorice Challenge

Recently in one of our maths lessons students worked together on a problem we named the 'Liquorice Challenge'. In groups students were given a wheel of liquorice, they first had to estimate the length of the wheel. Next they had to accurately measure the liquorice wheel using appropriate tools. Lastly they had to work out how to divide their liquorice evenly between the members of their group before cutting. This task was challenging for some students but it was terrific to see the resilience and teamwork shown by different groups to work together and explain their thinking as best they could.
