Aboriginal Education

This term indigenous students were trained up as leaders to teach year 7 students and practice their leadership skills.

The program, National Science Indigenous Education Program (NISEP) is run by the University of New England and supported by the Maquire University, aims to train up the next generation of Indigenous leaders through the use of Science experiments aimed at Year 7 students.

It was a very engaging day and all participants got a lot out of it. We look forward to seeing the people from NISEP again next year!

"Voice, Treaty, truth-telling, that is how we reconcile,"

Sophia-Rose Markham gave a rousing speech about reconciliation after around 250 people gathered for the annual bridge walk on Sunday.

The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together, acknowledging history and making strides toward reconciliation.

ANTaR Reconciliation Bridge Walk

On Sunday 26th May our school attended the ANTaR Reconciliation Bridge Walk to mark Reconciliation week. A huge thank you to all students and staff who showed up and also to our year 7 students from our ‘Me and My Mob’ program who painted our banner, it looked amazing. One of our Yr 12 students Sophia-Rose Markham was also this year's keynote speaker. Sophia delivered a passionate speech on this year's theme which was ‘Now More Than Ever’, well done Sophia we are so proud!

Sky Story

This week three of our students Hannah Whitton, Sophia-Rose Markham and Jake Rowbottom attend the Sky Story Symposium in Sydney with Alicia and Eiljah. This was a great opportunity for our students to connect with others and with culture as they got to participate in different workshops.

Tutoring

All our year 11 and 12 students have been working hard with their tutors this term. So if you have any questions or would like your child to be involved please contact Alicia in the AB-ED staffroom.

Junior Rangers Program

In partnership with the community connector and PCYC, we have started a new program for our year 7 and 8 students to connect with culture, develop health habits and create connections with each other.

Bro-Speak

A group of year 7 boys have recently started our Bro-Speak program which gives the boys an opportunity to learn more about their culture. The boys have already had a didgeridoo workshop run by Richard Lockwood, and we are looking forward to bringing in more members of the community in to help teach and give wisdoms to the boys.

Lyambay Dancers

Our Lyambay Dancers have been successful in being chosen to participate in the Mid-North Coast Dance Festival. The dancers will travel down to perform in week 10 of this term so stay tuned to hear how it went.

Bangarra Associate and Training Program

In preparation for school spectacular this year several of our students tried out for the Aboriginal Dance Company. We would like to congratulate Sophia-Rose Markham, Nya Quinlan, Alexis Lockwood and Jess Ferris who have made it into the Associate Program. Congratulations also to Edward Lockwood who was invited to join their Training Program. These students will now get to travel to Sydney to work with Bangarra.

Yr 10 ABCN Program

This term selected Yr10 students attended a virtual mentorship session through the Australian Business Community Network Program, this gave our students a chance to talk to people in the business community and get advice on their plans for the future.

National Indigenous Science Education Program

Earlier this term our students also participated in the National Indigenous Science Education Program. The program allowed for some of our senior students to lead our juniors through a range of science experiments. Gives our seniors a chance to work on their leadership skills and all of our students to participate in some science fun. A big thank you to our science faculty and UNE who helped organise and run the day.

In the Classrooms

This term in our classroom, in English our year 8’s have been learning the importance of storytelling, looking back at why they like their favourite stories and what makes a great one. Year 10 has also started looking at Shakespeare this term and are debating the question of whether Shakespeare is still relevant today. While in Maths year 9 students have been looking at trigonometry and year 7 are learning all there is to know about fractions.
