Illustrator Visit at ASC!
We had the pleasure of hosting Illustrator Cheryl Orsini for a captivating session with our IEC Level 2 and Level 3 Students! Cheryl, organised by the Children's Book Council of Australia, Armidale Branch, is on a mission to inspire young minds through her art, and she certainly left a lasting impression on our students.
Despite initial hesitations, our students were completely engaged throughout the session. Cheryl's passion for illustration and storytelling truly shone through, sparking creativity and excitement among our students.
In an unexpected turn of events, Cheryl even offered to illustrate a book about the IEC when one of our students suggested it should be about us! Now, one of our talented students has the exciting task of writing the story to accompany Cheryl's illustrations.
We're thrilled to see the creativity and collaboration sparked by Cheryl's visit, and we can't wait to see the final product of this exciting project! Stay tuned for more updates as our students bring their story to life with Cheryl's illustrations.
A heartwarming tale from our recycling efforts.
The Return-and-Earn machines are run by a company called TOMRA. In the past, we have sometimes had to pause our recycling while the TOMRA employees clean out the machines. These guys do an important job without much thanks; in our encounters with them and they have seemed rushed, or sometimes even grumpy with us!
We chatted to one of the workers while he worked in the pouring rain. Once he knew we were fundraising for ASC, he reached into his cab and handed us a stack of dockets. He wouldn't take any money: "Don't worry, they are mostly only 10 cents each".
It took a while to scan these at Woolies, and they came to $33.50. What a lovely gift to us from someone in the community who sees the value in what we do and wants to support us!
That means our Week 1 total is $78.80. ($45.30 + $33.50 = $78.80). Great start to Term 2!
Our overall earnings from recycling since we started at the end of 2020 are now $7600.20.
ASC won the NW Table Tennis Gala Day, beating a strong Farrer A team in the deciding round.
The team were all Year 9s this year: Dan Donaldson, Tommy Nguyen, Luke Rees, Ethan Rees, Caleb Flanagan. Plus the support squad: Cahill McIntyre, Dezi Suddaby, Silas Webster, and Will Alexander-Tollhurst.
All represented ASC faultlessly, playing at a high standard with good sportsmanship, and working all day to make the Gala Day run smoothly. Congrats and a commendation to all of them.
Thanks to Kim K and the PDHPE team for letting us use the Den all day.
And thanks to Tash and her Canteen staff for providing the excellent hot lunch.

Under 18s State Rugby Carnival
A stellar performance from our Year 12 students and Coach Jason Walker at the CHS Rugby Carnival in Bathurst representing the North West School Sports Association!
In challenging conditions, NW triumphed over Hunter with a 17-7 victory, with Henry Blackwell shining with a try and named the best forward on the field.
Despite early pressure from Western, NW rallied back in the second half, with Cooper Collins, Dallas Kelly, and Jack McLeod leading the charge. Their efforts secured four quick tries, turning the game around. Kudos to Jack McLeod and Henry Blackwell for their tries, with Dallas Kelly's finishing touches sealing the deal after excellent teamwork from Collins.
Coach Walker couldn't be prouder of ASC performance.

The experience equipped students with critical and creative thinking skills, building their confidence to tackle problems across the curriculum and beyond. We're proud of our students for embracing this opportunity and eager to see how these skills will benefit them in the future!
ASC Students Shine at NYSF!
Khaiam Ali and Anna Gooley attended the NYSF (National Youth Science Forum) in January, with Khaiam in Canberra and Anna in Brisbane.
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a not-for-profit organisation that runs a number of residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Our programs show the wide variety of engaging, rewarding and inspiring study and career options available in STEM fields.
On the 14th of May, they delivered 5-10 minute speeches/presentations about their NYSF experiences at the Rotary Club of Armidale meeting. Anna shared fascinating insights about seeing fish with schizophrenia, while Khaiam's enthusiasm was evident as he discussed the different models of drones he had the opportunity to explore.
We are incredibly proud of Khaiam and Anna for representing ASC so brilliantly and sharing their experiences!

In case you missed it - we recently announced the arrival of electric buses at ASC, marking a significant step towards a greener, more sustainable future!
At ASC, we believe in making learning relevant and engaging. These electric buses exemplify the real-world applications of our classroom teachings:
Year 7s: Exploring forces and Newton's laws, and how they relate to vehicle motion and safety features, especially pertinent with the electric buses' fast acceleration.
Year 8s: Investigating environmental impacts and human interactions. The electric buses and local solar farms offer valuable insights into sustainable energy systems.
Year 9s and 10s: Delving into chemistry, understanding battery reactions, and the conversion of chemical energy into electricity and back again with electrical input ideally from renewable power. The buses serve as a perfect illustration of this process.
The introduction of electric buses not only highlights the future of transportation but also underscores the importance of regional sustainability. We envision this as just the beginning, sparking a movement towards embracing electric vehicles in our region.
