Relationships: Golden Statements

At Bimbadeen Heights we pride ourselves on the connections and relationships teachers have with each and individual student. Having the classroom doors open from 8:50 am, allows teachers to have an instant connection and conversation with the students about their morning, night before or just purely welcome them into their classroom to promote positive learning outcomes.

Through the Berry Street Education Model, teachers have the opportunity to explore this Relationship domain further and unpack how to truly form, hold and connect with students to ensure their social and emotional learning needs are being met.

When dissecting the BSEM domain of Relationships, it consists of nine components, one of which is Golden Statements. Golden Statements play a powerful role in building relationships because they keep both student and teacher in thinking mode. They allow the responsibility to be shared between students and teachers. Golden Statements are special statements that teachers can use in classrooms to:

  • Give directions
  • Issue requests
  • State their expectations
  • Repeat their directions/requests/expectations

They help empower students because they can see that the teacher is holding the relationship and has clear expectations for the activity at hand. Golden statements, in other words, allow the teacher to repeat themselves in an effective way.

Some examples teachers have put into action in their classrooms in 2023 and 2024 are:

  • Instead of “ Please sit down” they have said “ I will begin when you are seated”
  • Instead of “Please be quiet and get ready” they have said “ I will start when voices are silent and eyes are on me”
  • Instead of “Don’t have that tone of voice with me” they have said “ I listen to students who are calm… Let’s de-escalate by breathing together”

When using Golden Statements, it helps highlight the values and behaviours we pride ourselves on that connect to School Wide Positive Behaviour tokens.

Feel free to try using this method at home, as it allows yourself to be Zen and work together to achieve an outcome by sharing responsibility.

Thank you,
