On Wednesday all classes met Matt. Matt is the Director of Education at the Marine Mammal Foundation. We were very lucky to be offered a fully funded in person incursion to learn about Marine Litter Projects and Bin Not Beach.
In these programs, students learnt about the incredible marine mammal diversity of the Victorian coastline, including the newly discovered Burrunan dolphin. Students learnt how MMF scientists identify dolphins through their unique dorsal fin nicks and notches, and head under the water with unique footage and dolphin echolocation recordings. They were introduced to the negative impact of litter, and how to demonstrate the simple strategies that can be undertake to reduce plastic a litter in local communities.
Our 4/5/6 cohort, were introduced to sustainability campaigns which can be undertaken within the classroom and wider school community to combat litter and water. Matt provided our teachers with activity plans allowing the students to lead their inquiry through hands-on and project-based learning activities.
Our Prep-2 cohort enjoyed the Bin Not Beach program which highlights the marine environment diversity of Victoria, students went along on the journey of discovering of the Burrunan dolphin, learnt about the impact of litter and plastics, how this connects to our local environment to marine environments, and Matt demonstrated the impact we can have in the conservation and protection of local environments through sustainability initiatives. Our Students had the opportunity to get hands-on with artefacts such as dolphin and seal skulls, along with whale bones, and other interactive sustainability-focused activities.
