ANZAC DAY

Thanks everyone for supporting the RSL’s appeal again this year - we sold out of badges, twice! We are very proud of our school captains, who did a terrific job representing the school and laying a wreath at the local service. There was certainly a big turnout and it is a day that is significant across the community.

A past student of Buninyong PS, William McCarey was recognised at the Arch of Victory service along with other local servicemen who have no known grave.

William Alexander McCarey (SN 799) was born in Buninyong and attended the local state school. He was a 21 year old pastry cook when he enlisted in Geelong on November 18th 1914. He joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment, embarking from Australia in February 1915 on board the Katuna, and saw action at Gallipoli from late July, followed by service in Egypt. He was killed in action on May 4th 1918 in Palestine. He has no known grave but his name is listed on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

AtoSS (Attitude to School Survey)

Our year 4-6 students will be participating in the annual Student Attitude to School Survey in the coming weeks. The survey provides data that is invaluable in understanding the student perspective of our school and to improve the schooling experience.

Further information will be sent home via Compass to the families of students in those year levels.

VAPING & SMOKING AROUND SCHOOLS

Parents, carers, schools, and community all play an important role in protecting children and young people from, and educating them about, the harmful effects of smoking and vaping.

Research from the Royal Children’s Hospital shows many parents and carers are not aware of the harmful effects or how their views about smoking and vaping can impact the likelihood of a young person taking up smoking or vaping.

The Department of Education has developed resources to help you learn more about the health risks of smoking and vaping. The resources include advice about how to talk to children and young people about vaping, and where to get support. To access the resources, go to https://www.vic.gov.au/smoking-and-vaping-advice-parents

You can also view this video on smoking and vaping from experts at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne for health advice and tips for starting a conversation with young people.

Please remember that a person must not smoke or vape on school premises or within 4 metres of any pedestrian access point to school premises. This includes during and outside of school hours, at school events and excursions held off school premises.
