It has been a busy start to the cold season here in the kitchen garden. Despite the days getting shorter and growth slowing for some plants, we took the opportunity to plant some seeds that love the cold weather. These include garlic, broad beans, shallots, peas, kale, silver beet, beetroot and spinach. We also potted up some lettuce which had self-seeded in one of our beds. Some of these seedlings will be on sale at the Mini Market in the coming weeks.
The 5/6s completed a tree and nesting box audit across the whole school. The data they have collected will be used to apply for a grant to replace broken nesting boxes and acquire new boxes for trees that currently don't have one. We learned that natural tree hollows take 90 years to form, so it was particularly exciting finding a natural tree hollow that has been inhabited by a little creature on our school grounds!
