Year 5/6 Report

Term 4 2025

Literacy

Reading

Throughout this term in reading students will complete Author Studies. This means that students will read several books by the same author to understand their consistent themes, recurring characters, and evolving style.

As we engage and explore each author students will:

  • Critically evaluate an author’s themes, characters, and writing style
  • Make connections between the author’s life and work
  • Make personal connections between their own experiences and those of the author and his/her characters

In addition to reading several works by an author, key components of an author study include discussion, research, and a final project.

Writing

Students will spend the term creating Memory books during our writing sessions.  This project is all about them. It is an opportunity for the students to reflect on their lives so far and think about what their lives might be like in the future.

When completing their memory book they will be required to use a range of skills.

 Key focuses are:

  • Write in a range of genres such as recount, information report and memoir
  • Use visual text such as timelines, family trees, photos and illustrations
  • Select and use objective and subjective language appropriately
  • Plan the layout of each page to ensure that information is presented in a clear and engaging way.

Mathematics

In the coming weeks, our Grade 5/6 students will be exploring number properties through a sequence of engaging lessons designed to deepen their understanding of how numbers work. Students will investigate odd and even numbers, identify and classify prime, composite, square, and triangular numbers, and learn how these concepts connect to patterns and problem-solving. They will also explore the commutative, associative, and distributive laws to understand how numbers can be rearranged and grouped to make calculations easier. Finally, students will apply BIDMAS (order of operations) to solve more complex number sentences accurately. This unit aims to strengthen students’ number sense and equip them with strategies to think flexibly and confidently about mathematics.

Inquiry

Building on the knowledge gained during Term 3 students will now create Travel Diaries. This will be an inquiry into the differences and similarities in the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of countries across the world. Students will get their passports organised and pack their suitcases and head off to explore the world. Students will research transportation between countries, budgets involved in travelling, understand the importance of an embassy and what to do during an emergency overseas.
