Social Emotional Learning at St Thomas
Launch into Learning
At St Thomas, social and emotional learning is an important part of everyday school life. Children develop these skills through interactions with teachers and classmates, following routines, and building friendships.
Teachers get to know each child as a learner and support them to share their ideas, listen to others, and participate in discussions. We use excellent picture story books to explore emotions, relationships and problem-solving.
Children are also introduced to the Respectful Relationships curriculum (with Catholic worldview discernment about which lessons are taught from the sequence), learning how to be kind, respectful and supportive friends. Teachers model positive behaviours, showing children how to communicate, cooperate and care for others in everyday situations.
Wellbeing check-ins
Students are taught about the different emotions they may experience and strategies to help them navigate these feelings.
To support student wellbeing, students complete a morning check-in each day. This allows them to identify how they are feeling and whether they would like to speak with a trusted adult. Their nominated trusted adult will follow up with them and address any concerns when necessary.
