Day of the Dead Celebrations

Year 7 & 8 Spanish

Día de los Muertos: A Celebration of Culture and Creativity

On Wednesday, students across all year levels studying Spanish participated in a vibrant celebration of Día de los Muertos - the Day of the Dead. This important tradition, observed in Mexico and other parts of the Spanish-speaking world, honours the lives of loved ones who have passed, blending Indigenous and Catholic customs to create a unique and meaningful cultural event.

As part of our Spanish curriculum, students explored the cultural significance of Día de los Muertos through a range of creative, hands-on activities. They painted colourful calaveras (skulls), crafted expressive calacas (skeleton figures), and designed intricate papel picado (cut paper banners), all while building vocabulary and cultural understanding.

These engaging experiences brought language learning to life, helping students connect with the cultural practices of Spanish-speaking communities in an authentic and memorable way.
