Chinatown Excursion
Year 7 & 8 Chinese
In Week 3, classes 7C, 7D, 7E, 8B, and 8D went on an excursion. It was a wonderful day of learning and exploration. Students visited the Chinese Museum and Chinatown, where they discovered more about Chinese history, traditions, and culture. They enjoyed exploring cultural displays and taking part in hands-on activities. It was a meaningful experience that helped students connect what they had learned in class to the real world.




‘My favourite part was the food court near Chinatown, because I got to eat yummy food! I learnt how to knot like Chinese people, and it was very fun. I also liked the boat/gold rush area in the museum as it was very knowledgeable.’ – Caleb 7C
‘The Chinese excursion was very fun; we got to learn about Chinese history and about how their story of how or why they migrated to Melbourne. We also looked at dynasties and emperors who were buried with things they wanted to take to the afterlife. My favourite part was when we went to the food court in Chinatown, i was able to take some good pictures.’ – Michelle 7C
‘The Chinese excursion was extremely interesting and fun. Even though we couldn't go to Chinatown due to the rain the workshop and museum were nice. The museum guide shared a lot of different types of facts that were interesting. I really liked the food court. And the bracelets from the workshop turned out very nice-looking.’ – Mahnoor 7C
‘My favourite part of the Chinese excursion was the knots with the string. It was cool to learn about the different knots. I also liked the basement level, where they had a ship model that moved to simulate the waves on the trip to Australia. feeling the movement gave me a real sense of what those journeys must have been like. ‘My favourite part of the Chinese Museum was the workshop where we got to make the bracelets and what I learned was in China they used to use knots to communicate instead of writing. This experience was very fun and entertaining.’ – Japleen 7D
‘My favourite part of the Chinatown excursion was the Chinese Museum. I found the Chinese Museum very significant and important to us and the Chinese people since it tells us what has been there for a very long time. I learnt about the Chinese Dragon and how its significant to the Chinese, and when it comes out. It usually comes out on Chinese New Year, and people do many different celebrations there. I learnt about the history in China which I found really interesting. Overall, my experience was very fun even though we didn't get to do the Chinatown tour.’ – Adna 7D

‘My favourite part when going to the Chinese Museum, was when we went to the workshop and made colorful bracelets and learnt how to make it in a Chinese twist, and when learning more about the Chinese culture, I learnt that they used an ancient tool named Houfeng Didong Yi, to signal them what direction an earthquake was and what village or town to tell, and was invented by Zhang Heng, and created in 132 CE, and I really enjoyed learning more about the Chinese culture.’ – Oriwa 7E
‘My favourite part was the old ancient Chinese artifacts and their use and importance. I learnt about the great inventions from the Han dynasty. I really enjoyed our time there in Chinatown.’ – Manreet 8B
‘I liked when we walked through China town because i said hello to every car that went past and also said hello to everyone on the streets. I also liked when we sat down in the food court and i was sitting with my friends and we ate dumplings.’ – Josiah 8B
‘My favourite part of the Museum was all the information and the cool items they had on showcase. My favourite part of Chinatown was when we were just walking around and getting a tour and getting info about different buildings and how they are part of Chinatown's history and how they demonstrate Chinese culture. One thing I learned about Chinese culture was in the Museum when we saw the burial suit and 63 metre long dragon. I thoroughly enjoyed the excursion.’ – Abdullah 8B
‘My favourite part of the excursion was when we were able to explore the museum and Chinatown and take a lot of photos. One thing I learned about Chinese culture was the history and and the first Chinese settlers in Australia. ‘My favourite part of the Chinese museum was the going on the boat and having the same perspective as they did back in the day, as the boat moved it was very realistic as it was even creaking an little. For my chinatown excursion my favourite was the walking around and receiving information about different buildings and roads feeing bizarre and anguished looking at everythung and becoming more knowledgeable.’ – Manseerat 8B

‘I really liked how we got to experience Chinese past history, and how it made it to how it is today. Not only was it fun, with the interactive rooms and props, it was also educational with all the information that there was, describing all of the artifacts. Something new that i learned was how exactly that the Chinese, or really anyone of colour, was treated by European settlers.’ – Lina 8D
‘My favourite part of the Chinese Museum and Chinatown excursion was seeing the giant Millennium Dragon and learning about its meaning in Chinese celebrations. I was amazed by how carefully it was made and how it represents good luck and strength. I also enjoyed walking through Chinatown and seeing all the shops, decorations, and foods that show Chinese culture. I learned that dragons and festivals are an important way for people to celebrate their traditions and bring the community together. ‘During my visit to the Chinese Museum and Chinatown, my favourite part was definitely tour. I learned a lot about the history of the Chinese community in the area, and one thing that really struck me was how deeply Chinese culture values family and tradition, especially in how they celebrate festivals like Lunar New Year, as well as how Chinese culture is incorporated into everyday life. Overall, the experience left me feeling connected to a rich cultural heritage, and I was grateful to have had the chance to learn and taste my way through such a vibrant part of the world. ‘My personal highlight of the Chinese Museum was viewing the Chinese goldrush and viewing the innovations of the Han Dynasty including Pianos, Negative Numbers and paper while viewing the processes of creations and how they differ from today.’ – Salar 8D
