The Importance of Learning to Make Good Choices

At school, students learn far more than reading, writing and mathematics. Each day they are also learning one of life’s most important skills – how to make good choices.

From the moment students arrive at school, they are faced with decisions. Do I include someone in my game? Do I complete my work carefully? Do I tell the truth when I’ve made a mistake? These everyday moments help shape a child’s character and set the foundation for lifelong habits.

Learning to make good choices builds confidence and independence. When children understand that their decisions have consequences – both positive and negative – they begin to take ownership of their actions. This empowers them to think before they act, consider others, and develop self-control. Over time, these small daily choices grow into strong values such as honesty, kindness, resilience and responsibility.

As educators and families, we play an important role in guiding children through this process. We can:

  • Model positive decision-making.
  • Talk through possible consequences.
  • Encourage children to pause and reflect.
  • Praise effort and thoughtful choices.
  • Support them when mistakes happen, helping them learn and try again.

Mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning. When children feel safe to admit an error and make it right, they develop resilience and integrity. Rather than fearing failure, they begin to see challenges as opportunities to grow.

At Resurrection School, we guide students to make good choices using our Positive Behaviour for Learning matrix through which they learn to be respectful, responsible and resilient in all aspects and areas of school. Respect, Responsibility and Resilience are our school expectations; students are acknowledged for showing consistent, positive behaviour and face consequences if they make unfair or unkind choices.

By working together – school and home – we can nurture thoughtful, respectful and responsible young people who are equipped to 'Rise and Shine' in all areas of their lives. Every good choice, no matter how small, helps build toward a bright and successful future.

At Resurrection School, we believe that a key to a students’ success lies in the partnership between families and schools. When teachers, parents, and caregivers work together, students thrive at school.

Family involvement in a child's education helps build a strong support system. By sharing insights, setting goals, and celebrating achievements together, we create an environment where students feel valued and motivated to do their best. From attending Learning in Partnership Meetings (LIP) to assisting with school activities, every small effort makes a difference.

We will continue to strengthen our partnership for the benefit of your child when we meet together next week on Tuesday, March 17th for the Learning in Partnership Meetings to discuss progress so far this year. If you have a Parent Support Group meeting, you do not have to book a LIP.

Please note: due to limited staff numbers avavilable for student supervision on March 17th, we ask that students be picked up at 1.40-1.50p.m. from their classrooms.
