F/1/2 CLASSROOM

Over the past few weeks, students in our F/1/2 classroom have been working very hard across all learning areas and it has been wonderful to see the progress they are making as the term continues.
Our Foundation students have been building strong early literacy skills. Over the last few weeks, they have learned three new letters and sounds, they have been practising recognising these in words. They have also begun working on blending and segmenting three sounds to read simple words, which is an important step in developing their early reading skills. In Mathematics, the Foundation students have started exploring counting and early place value, practising counting collections and beginning to understand how numbers are made up.
Our Grade 1 students have been working hard in literacy to revise and consolidate their knowledge of digraphs, strengthening their understanding of the different letter combinations that represent sounds in words. In Mathematics, they have been focusing on place value, including representing numbers, and comparing and ordering two-digit numbers. Students have been using a range of strategies and materials to help them visualise and understand how numbers are constructed.
Similarly, our Grade 2 students have been working on place value in Mathematics, alongside the Grade 1 students, where they have been comparing and ordering two-digit numbers and representing numbers using different strategies.
In Literacy, Grade 2 students have been learning about pronouns in grammar and exploring persuasive texts during our comprehension and fluency sessions. In spelling, they have been learning about the Bossy e rule, discovering how the silent ‘e’ at the end of a word can change the vowel sound.
In Inquiry, students have begun learning about Chemical Sciences, where we are exploring different materials and how they can change. Students have been observing, discussing and investigating how materials behave in different situations and thinking about how we use materials in our everyday lives. The students planned and constructed their own houses or schools using different materials in the classroom.
In Religion, students have been learning about the season of Lent and what it means for our school community. We have been discussing ways we can show kindness, compassion and care for others during this time, as well as learning about Project Compassion and how small acts can make a big difference to people around the world.
It has been fantastic to see students continuing to settle into classroom routines, show care for their learning, and support one another in our classroom community.
