The Year Ahead for Maths

We are excited to again offer several opportunities for students to challenge themselves and extend their mathematical thinking through national mathematics competitions and investigations during 2026. These events provide rich problem-solving experiences and allow students to engage with mathematics in creative and challenging ways.

APSMO Maths Olympiad

Term 2 - Year 7 and 8

Our high abilities Year 7 and 8 students will be invited to participate in the Maths Olympiad run by the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO). This international competition focuses on deep problem-solving, encouraging students to think creatively.

The Olympiad consists of four rounds across the year, each containing five challenging problems. The competition runs:

  • Round 1: Week 3, Term 2
  • Round 2: Week 8, Term 2
  • Round 3: Week 3, Term 3
  • Round 4: Week 9, Term 3

AMT Maths Talent Quest

Term 2 – Year 7 to 10

The Maths Talent Quest, organised by the Australian Maths Trust, is a project-based mathematics investigation that allows Year 7 - 10 students of any ability to explore a mathematical idea or question in depth. Students work individually or in small groups to investigate a problem, collect data, analyse results and present their findings in a written report or display.

During Term 2, students will be able to meet after school on Thursdays with the supervising teacher, Mr Whelan, to discuss their project and receive help and feedback. Over the weeks students will explore an idea, find opportunities for learning, and prepare their final submission.

Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO)

Our high performing Year 9 and 10 maths students will be invited to complete the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad presented by the Australian Maths Trust.

  • Term 3, Week 9

This four-hour contest provides a significant challenge and is an excellent opportunity for students who enjoy tackling complex mathematical problems.

We look forward to seeing our students engage with these opportunities and continue developing their problem-solving skills and enthusiasm for mathematics throughout the year.
