Year Level Captain's Report

Year 9 Captain’s Report
During the last couple of days, the Year 7s and 9s have been doing NAPLAN, a series of tests to allow them to demonstrate their skills. The topic of these tests included numeracy, reading, writing and finally spelling, grammar and punctuation.
However, due to unknown state-wide technical difficulties, the tests were postponed by one day. During this period, the Year 7 and 9s were really resilient and managed to adapt to the situation, continuing their testing when everything was resolved. This marked the end of NAPLAN testing for the Year 9s, as going forward into next year they will have the opportunity to participate in VCE subjects.
Additionally, the Year 7s reached another milestone in their secondary schooling journey. Both the year levels did an amazing job bouncing back from the disruption, making the best of the situation. Good luck to all those that still need to do their catchup tests!
To promote International Women’s Day, Year 12 girls faced off against staff in a volleyball match. The whole event was a blast, from friendly banter to heated competition. Students from other year levels were able to come spectate, learning the importance of equality and rights in a fun and entertaining way. The event helped to foster connection between students and staff, helping to build strong bonds and relationships while prioritising equality and fairness.
Furthermore, a group of Year 9 students have started working on a project called Teach the Teacher. Their aim is to identify an issue outlined by the Attitudes to School Survey conducted last year, then educate teachers from a student’s perspective. Working together, they are first finding and creating realistic solutions to these problems. After a solid plan has been developed, they will address the issue and their solutions to the teachers, who will then hopefully implement them. All this will help foster not only a healthier learning environment, but a mental and social one, too, connecting staff and students through strong and healthy bonds.

A couple weeks ago on the 25th of February we had our annual swimming carnival at Oakleigh Outdoor Pool. On a day that didn’t have the best weather it was one of our best swimming carnivals at the college.
The way the day was laid out worked well with a mix of fun events to keep everyone entertained and some very good swimming from the strong swimmers we have at this school.
The day was spilt into three sessions with freestyle and breaststroke at the start with some water volleyball games to follow in the middle session with the classic catch going on as well making the middle session filled with fun activities to compete in.
The day rounded off with backstroke, butterfly and freestyle relays. While all this was going on we had games such as volleyball and spike ball happening on the grass area away from the pool.
We had some amazing swimming from lots of students, and it was awesome to see everyone compete in such a fun filled successful day for the college.
A big thanks to all students who attended regardless of swimming ability and to the teachers who made the day possible from organizing the day, getting the results from each race, marshalling students and walking around the house area.

On Monday the 16th, Beaumaris Secondary celebrated International Women’s Day. Students wore a touch of purple and casual clothes to show support. The people who participated brought a gold coin donation and all the funds are going to a women’s-based charity. In GOAL group, students played an international woman’s day-based trivia. Students also wrote cards to important women in their life (example: their mum, sister, grandma or friend). Overall, we all had a great day celebrating International Women’s Day!

The year 12 female students and female staff members participated in a volleyball match during lunchtime. This was a positive and fun way to connect with their peers and teachers to celebrate International Women’s Day. The whole school was invited to come and show their support to both the teachers and students playing in the match, and it ended with a great turnout. With the outcome being the Year 12 female students winning both matches, 21-20 and 21-18. Overall, we all had a great day celebrating International Women’s Day!
