Our students have shown such calmness, maturity and determination throughout the NAPLAN assessments. By the time you read this, most of the testing will be complete, with just one final session ahead. We are incredibly proud of the way students have approached each day—ready to try their best and support one another.
Last week, I came across a message from a fellow Melbourne principal that expressed something I strongly believe about NAPLAN. They compared the assessments to a single photograph: a moment captured on one particular day. In contrast, the real story of a child’s learning is more like a full‑length video — full of movement, depth, context and the countless moments that make up their growth across the year. That ongoing “video” is what gives us the richest understanding of who our students are as learners.
NAPLAN tests offer us one helpful perspective, but they will never define a child’s capabilities, their creativity, their sense of curiosity or the relationships and problem‑solving we see unfolding daily in our classrooms. Those are the moments that matter most.
I also want to acknowledge the tremendous work of our staff. Their thoughtful preparation, calm guidance and unwavering focus on student wellbeing have ensured that NAPLAN has been a supportive experience for our students. This was clearly evidenced by the way that our Year 5 teachers supported our students through the postponement of the Writing test. Behind every smooth assessment period is a team of educators who plan carefully, encourage gently and create learning environments where children feel confident and capable.
Thank you to our families for your encouragement and reassurance during this busy period. We now look forward to settling back into our usual routines and continuing to nurture each child’s learning journey — the long, rich “video” that tells the real story of their growth.
