"Learning to alter and upcycle clothing is becoming a necessary skill, for the planet, and for our pockets."
Mrs Godfrey took our Year 9 Textiles students on a hands-on excursion to the three op shops of Healesville, giving them the chance to source materials for their upcoming Design Challenge CAT. Armed with an eye for hidden gems and a brief to upcycle, students browsed the racks for pieces they could transform back in the classroom.
For some students it was a first foray into the world of second-hand shopping, for others, it was an opportunity to dive in and play dress-ups among the treasures. Either way, plenty of fun was had exploring what our own town has to offer.
A big thank you to the Lions Den and East End op shops for their warm welcome and for extending a student discount to our group.
This excursion sits at the heart of why upcycling matters. In an era of fast fashion and a rising cost of living, knowing how to alter, repair, and reimagine clothing is an increasingly valuable, and practical life skill. We look forward to seeing what our students create with their finds.
