Year 8 Science: Blasting Off, getting Hands-On, and a whole lot of learning!

What a brilliant start to the year it has been for our Year 8 scientists! Our classes have been full of excitement, curiosity, and—let’s be honest—a little bit of controlled chaos.
Our students have dived headfirst into the Victorian Curriculum’s Science Toolkit, and they’ve been putting it to excellent use. First up, they turned into rocket engineers with Balloon Rockets, testing how different variables affect speed and distance. It turns out that not all balloons are created equal—some flew like supersonic jets, others… well, more like slow-moving turtles!
Things got a little hands-on (and slightly squishy) during chicken-wing dissections, where students explored the structure and function of joints, tendons, and ligaments. There was a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” as they discovered how these parts work together to make movement possible. Who knew chicken wings could teach us so much about our own bodies?
Then came the marshmallow slingshots, where our budding physicists launched marshmallows across the classroom to explore elastic potential energy and propulsion. The lesson? Science can be sweet—and messy—but always deliciously educational!
Of course, it wasn’t all about flight and food. Our Year 8s also investigated chemical vs. physical reactions, mixing, fizzing, and sometimes exploding (safely, of course!) to see how substances change in different ways. Spoiler alert: some reactions are permanent, others… not so much.
From rockets to wings, slingshots to chemical reactions, our Year 8s have had an absolute blast learning in Science. The energy, curiosity, and laughter they’ve brought to each class makes it clear that this year is shaping up to be an unforgettable one. We can’t wait to see what experiments—and fun—they come up with next!
