F1 Excursion to the Melbourne Grand Prix

On Thursday 5th March, we took 38 students and 6 staff to the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Melbourne’s Albert Park.

What an amazing day was had with students from Year 5 all the way to Year 12!

From the moment we arrived, it was full on, with V8 Supercars going full throttle past the stands right where we entered Albert Park. Ms Reid, Mrs Deller and myself took the Primary students, whilst Mr Eacott looked after our Year 8 and 9 students, Mr Macey took Year 10, and Mr Bowles took Year 11 and 12.

The Driving Learning Day was an engaging and inspiring day for our students, who got to experience the Monash University interactive showcase, driving SIMs, the Porsche exhibition, and watch the Supercar and Porsche Carrera Cup qualifying races. They also got to meet Supercar driver Matthew Belford and get his autograph.

The students bought merchandise from their favourite racing teams, and it was between Red Bull and McLaren for the biggest fans!

Throughout the day, students explored the Innovation Hub presented by Engineers Australia, where they discovered how science, technology, engineering and mathematics power the world of motorsport. From student-built race cars and planetary rovers to robotics demonstrations and cutting-edge driving simulators, the experience brought classroom learning to life and highlighted the many exciting pathways available in STEM careers.

A big thank you to Julia Reid, Lee Macey, Tim Bowles, Trent Eacott and Nici Deller for their great help on the day. I’m not sure who enjoyed the day more — the teachers or the students!

We hope that the day may inspire a future Oscar Piastri, a designer of F1 cars, or a brilliant engineer, and we look forward to taking students again next year!

"We were very lucky to go and see the Formula One racing in Melbourne.

On the bus trip I sat next to Mr Bowles and we talked about all the things we were going to do. We chatted all the way to Melbourne. When we arrived at the gates, they were packed full of F1 fans. As soon as we entered, we could hear the roaring V8 supercars going along the track at max throttle.

We headed into the main area which had a massive merch store, the biggest I have ever seen. I just got an F1 hat that you can’t find anywhere in the whole entire world. There was also a cool Porsche exhibit featuring many cars from different eras.

I have to give a big thank you to Miss O'Neill for organising this event.  This opportunity was amazing and I hope to come next year. Go RED BULL!"

-Akain Perera 5B

"The F1 excursion was the best and we learnt all about racing. We all went to the Porsche exhibition and all of it was so fun. We saw lots of cars, even a F1 car and it was a Cadillac and a HAAS car and we even watched the V8 supercars and it was so amazing and very loud.

We went shopping and some of us got a hat and I bought a McLaren team hat as they are my favourite racing team. My favourite race was the Red Bull V8 supercars. A big thank you to Ms O’Neill for the best excursion ever! Go MCLAREN!!"

-Harry Nichol 5B

"On Thursday the 5th of March, a range of students from Years 5–12 embarked on an exciting excursion to Albert Park in Melbourne. The day was filled with both education and fun as we explored the venue and took part in a variety of activities.

Senior students were able to race on Formula 1 simulators, experiencing what it feels like to drive an F1 car at speeds of up to 200 km/h. Students also visited the Monash University tent, where they coded and interacted with different robots, gaining hands-on experience with technology.

Towards the end of the day, students watched the V8 Supercars race and had the chance to purchase merchandise from their favourite teams. The bus ride home was much quieter, as everyone was exhausted after such a big and eventful day.

Overall, it was a fantastic experience where students were able to learn new things and enjoy a unique opportunity. A big thank you to Ms O’Neill for organising this wonderful day, and to all the teachers who attended and made it possible."

MAG Takes on the Scots Interschool Challenge

Ten riders from the MAG Equestrian Squad proudly represented the school at the Scots Equestrian Interschool Challenge, held on 5–6 March 2026 at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre. Across the two days of competition, riders competed in a range of disciplines including dressage, showing and jumping, achieving many personal bests and with several students trying new events for the first time. After a strong start, our School held 1st place overall following the Dressage and Showing day, an outstanding result among a highly competitive field of schools.

By the conclusion of the second day of competition, the team finished an impressive 6th place overall (out of 32 teams), with many individual highlights including champion rider titles, class wins and numerous personal best performances. The showjumping team particularly demonstrated grit and resilience and a significant improvement from 2025 with no placings, to finish 2026 with multiple class wins, placings and a champion in the mix. Miss Briggs was very proud of this progress facilitated through their hard work in the MAG Equestrian Squad training sessions.

Highlights included in the Primary section, Mea Whitelegg finished 4th overall and Elise Stevens placed 12th overall (out of 54 riders), while in the Intermediate Secondary section Charlotte Harris achieved 8th overall (out of 57 riders).

A sincere thank you to the wonderful parent helpers who supported the riders across the event, and to Miss Briggs and Miss Sweetnam for their ongoing dedication to the squad and the development of the MAG Equestrian Squad training program.

MAG Students Compete at CIS NSW Trials

Five students recently travelled to Sydney to compete in the Primary School CIS NSW Trials for basketball, proudly representing our Regional Association (RAS).

Archie Flanigan, Halle Moon, Denny Moon, Evie Williams and Sophie Frazer took to the field against talented students from across the state, demonstrating outstanding skill, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day.

A highlight of the competition was the remarkable performance of the RAS girls’ team, who remained undefeated and proudly brought home the gold medal.

Following the trials, selectors named the top 18 boys and top 18 girls for final team consideration. We are incredibly proud that all five Moama Anglican Grammar students were selected in the final top 18, an outstanding achievement that reflects their dedication and hard work.

Also, congratulations to Evie Williams and Sophie Frazer, who have been selected to represent NSW at the upcoming carnival in Port Macquarie. We wish them every success as they compete at the next level.

Inaugural ICCES Tournament

Students recently travelled to Ballarat to represent the school at the ICCES Swimming, Badminton and Table Tennis Tournament. The day provided a fantastic opportunity for our students to compete against other schools from within Victoria, demonstrate their skills and show great sportsmanship.

Across all three sports, our students represented the school with integrity, determination and enthusiasm. There were many strong performances in the pool, along with exciting and closely contested matches in both badminton and table tennis.

Beyond the results, the day was a wonderful chance for students to challenge themselves, support their teammates and enjoy the experience of interschool competition. We are very proud of the effort, behaviour and teamwork shown by all students who participated.

Honourable mentions to Jack Hawkins for taking out Year 9 Age Champion in the swimming, and to Vika Yarygin, Sithuli Ganepola and Savannah Bohn for finishing runners-up in the Junior Girls Badminton, only losing to the reigning champions by 2 points. We also came 2nd in the handicap for swimming.

This format was new to many of the students, featuring several differences from traditional netball. There were no wing positions, rolling substitutions, designated 1, 2 and 3-point scoring zones, and a “power play” half where points were doubled, allowing up to six points for a single goal.

The day began slowly as the team familiarised themselves with the rules and the fast-paced nature of the game. Their second and third matches showed great improvement, with strong defensive pressure and impressive intercept play. During one power play half, the team scored a massive 40 goals in 12 minutes!

The fourth game was highly competitive and physical, with strong passages of play from both sides. Unfortunately, the timing of the power play periods worked against us, resulting in a narrow loss. Had the power play halves been reversed, we would have won the match.

Finishing the preliminary rounds with a 2–2 record, the team progressed to a playoff for 5th place. Once again, they delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 40 goals in one half. Although the opposition fought back with multiple long-range shots to take the lead with three minutes remaining, strategic rolling substitutions allowed our team to regain momentum and secure a 9-goal victory, finishing 5th overall.

Matilda Medland was awarded MVP for her outstanding defensive pressure, intercepts and rebounding efforts throughout the day.

All students reported a highly enjoyable experience and represented the school with great enthusiasm. Thank you to Ms Thompson and Trent for accompanying the team on the day.

Squads

It is great to see the number of students who have taken up the opportunity for Squads both before and after school. The numbers have been so impressive that we have had to create more sessions to give everyone the opportunity to be involved. We are currently running 23 sessions each week across the sports.

We have 12 sports running or about to start in the squad program, which involves over 330 students, some of whom are doing multiple squads. A huge thank you to the coaches who are running these programs, and I know that the students are really enjoying these sessions.

I was lucky enough to be at the Year 3 and 4 soccer squad this morning, and it was great to see the enthusiasm these students have and the care and knowledge that Coach Paige provides them.

A couple of reminders to students in the squad program:

  • Bring extra food to school for after your sessions as they are high intensity and you will get hungry.
  • Be on your best behaviour.
  • Make sure you are 5 minutes early so you are ready to go at the start of the session.
  • Make sure you have all your gear including a water bottle.

If your child would like to participate in this program please reach out to me at gcadd@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au

AFL Squad Training

We are excited to announce that our AFL Football squad training sessions will be commencing next week (Week beginning Monday 23 March).

These initial sessions will act as an introduction to our program, where we will begin laying the foundation for our squad and future teams. Students will develop key skills, gain an understanding of expectations, and begin working within team structures as we build towards a successful season ahead.

Training Schedule:

  • Tuesday 7:45 am (Years 5–7): 24 March & 31 March
  • Thursday 7:45 am (Years 8–12): 26 March & 2 April

All sessions will take place before school. Students are encouraged to arrive prepared in appropriate sports uniform, with football boots and a water bottle.

If you have not yet signed your student up, they are still welcome to attend their designated morning session and we will add them to our squad list.

We are looking forward to seeing strong participation and enthusiasm as we continue to grow our AFL program.

MAG Umpire Academy

We are proud to announce the launch of the Moama Anglican Grammar Umpire Academy, with our inaugural sessions commencing in Weeks 9 and 10.

Sessions will run on Mondays at 3:30pm, beginning in Week 9, and are open to students in Year 7-10 interested in developing their knowledge and skills in AFL umpiring, including central, boundary or goal.

We are extremely fortunate to have Andrew Moore leading the program. Andrew is the Regional Director of Umpiring for AFL Goulburn Murray and brings a wealth of experience to the academy. He has umpired over 400 senior games and is set to reach the remarkable milestone of 500 games this year. Andrew also holds the record for officiating the most GVL Grand Finals and is heavily involved in umpire education, development, and training across the region. Through his work, he supports local clubs in meeting their umpiring requirements, delivers umpire development roadshows, and is a passionate advocate for encouraging young people to take up umpiring.

During these initial sessions, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of umpiring and begin building an understanding of the key skills, rules, and expectations involved. This will provide a strong foundation ahead of more in-depth sessions planned for next term.

Our goal is to develop confident and capable student umpires, with opportunities to officiate at local weekend matches, Friday night games, and interschool competitions.

We look forward to seeing students take advantage of this fantastic opportunity and become involved in an important and rewarding aspect of AFL.

For any further information, please feel free to get in touch to Mr Darcy Hall.
