The Importance of Collectively Lifting Aspiration for Students
One of the greatest enablers and determinants of supporting our students to thrive, grow, and achieve their personal best results across the life of their schooling, is the nurturing of self-belief.
Belief cannot be taught. It is an attribute that is progressively developed through the provision of repeated proactive feedback, and students clearly knowing or being able to identify where they are currently at, and what they need to do to move their learning forwards, through actionable and tangible feedback.
For all students from Kindergarten to Year 12, that teacher, professional staff member, parent, guardian, carer, music tutor, production leader, sport coach and significant others, who demonstrate that they believe in each student’s ability to grow and achieve personal best results, makes a significant difference to their learning and aspiration.
This week I was reminded of the importance of sharing a highly positive and ‘can do’ attitude during one of my regular listening lunches with a small group of upper Secondary students.
During our conversation, which primarily focused on how each student was currently travelling with their studies and what their greatest learning challenge was at the time, each of the students shared their current aspiration for their career paths and ambitions beyond school.
This was a terrific conversation that enabled me to support students to shift their mindsets from ‘possible options’ to ‘I can achieve this outcome if………’
Such moments across the scope of every academic classroom and learning environment are pivotal to support our students to be at their best and to believe in their futures.
Our 2026 school community theme, Aspire, reflects our commitment to nurturing a culture where every student is encouraged to aim high, challenge themselves, and grow with confidence. It also speaks to our belief that aspiration is not just a destination, it is a mindset that shapes how we learn, teach, grow and support one another to achieve together.
Our Staff continue to collectively engage in professional learning centred on this theme. Together, we have explored what it means to aspire as educators: to refine our practice, to collaborate with purpose, and to use evidence to guide our decisions so that every student can thrive every day.
