Year 5 Report

Term 3 2024

Welcome back to another term of fantastic learning.  We hope you all have had a wonderful break, and ready to start a new semester! 

 

Literacy

 

In Reading this Term the Grade 5 students will begin by looking at a variety on non fiction that are related to out inquiry unit on Colonial Australia.  To support students reading skills they will develop skills of note taking by identifying key events and words and then using those to write a succinct summary about what they have read. Students will also look at the language features of non fiction texts and begin asking questions about the texts they have read. Students will continue to work on their reading goals and practice reading independently to build stamina. 

In Writing the students will be given the opportunity to create a timeline of significant events in Australia's history which will help they create a chronological report about Colonial Australia.  The students will learn about the significant features of a chronological information report and use their knowledge from reading and inquiry to include key information.  

 

Math

 

During Math this term the Grade 5 students have begun by furthering their understanding of capacity by using hands on materials to compare, order and estimate the amount of liquid in a container. Students will then continue on to learning about shapes by connect three-dimensional objects with their two-dimensional representations. Students will then further their understanding of multiplication and learning to understand the importance of using the most efficient strategy to solve a problem. They will have opportunities to use concrete materials to represent the equations and also solve multiplication equations using the split strategy, vertical algorithms and round and adjust. 

 

 

Inquiry

 

In Inquiry, students will begin to explore the Semester 2 topic of Colonial Australia. They will begin by learning about the significant events that occurred in Australia's early history and begin to understand how it shaped they nation we are today. Students will have opportunities to learn about Australia history by watching videos and reading materials including fiction and non-fiction texts. 

 

NAIDOC WEEK 

Students in grade 5/6 learnt about the importance of NAIDOC week. Across the grade 5 and 6 classes students completed a collaborative art activity to share with the whole school at assembly.
