Term 3 Information

It has been wonderful to see our Australian athletes showcasing incredible talent, determination, and sportsmanship on the global stage. Their performances have been a source of inspiration for us all, demonstrating the value of hard work and perseverance. At Loreto, we are proud to foster these same values in our students, whether it is academics or sports, we encourage everyone to strive for excellence and to support one another in achieving our personal bests. With just one round remaining before the finals, we hope to carry this determination and never-give-up attitude into our games.

The time and venue for finals on Saturday 10th August and Saturday 17th August will be released a few of days prior to the game. The times for Week 2 games are below:

Round 9 Fixtures

Pink Round

Just a reminder that this week (Week 2) is the scheduled PINK ROUND for sport.

In support of Australians affected by breast cancer, School Sport Associations SAAS, SACSSGSA and IGSSA have scheduled PINK ROUND into our sports fixture calendars for all sports games in our associations from July 31st – August 3rd, 2024.

We encourage players, officials, supervisors, and spectators to wear PINK to raise breast cancer awareness, generate discussion encouraging breast screening, and show support for the 20,000+ women and men diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year.

Term 4 Information

Term 4 sports nominations are now open and need to be completed by Friday 16th August 2024. To complete a nomination, please click here.

Intercol Competition

Our annual intercollegiate competition between Mary Mackillop College and Loreto College will take place on Wednesday 21 August 4:00pm – 6:15pm at Mary Mackillop College. This event strengthens the shared community between the two schools. We cannot wait to see the Loreto community come together in support of our teams, showcasing the Loreto spirit. We hope to see many of you there cheering our teams on.

Knockout Competition

Our Knockout teams continue to compete in the Statewide Competition representing Loreto well. Some of the games we have in coming weeks include:

  • Years 10 - 12 Football (AFLW) Round 3– Monday 5th August.
  • Years 7- 9 Football (AFLW) Round 1 – Wednesday 7th August
  • Years 9/10 Soccer Round 2 – Monday 12th August

We wish these teams the best of luck!

Injury Prevention Session

This term, Loreto hosted a Sports Injury Prevention session for our students to enhance their understanding of common injuries, prevention strategies, and methods to improve core stability and overall flexibility. We extend a big thank to Rhiannon Hughes from Tweak Physio for facilitating this session and sharing invaluable knowledge to help reduce our risk of injury.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Year 9 students Izzy Harris and Jessica Nguyen who competed in the 2024 SAUCNA Junior Carnival in the July holidays and successfully won their division.

We have lots of Loreto students achieving great success in sport and it is lovely to celebrate each other’s achievements so please let me know if your daughter has achieved highly in a sport as I would love to be able to share these successes with the College community.

Junior School Sport

The Olympics is in full swing, and it is an exciting time to be playing sport!

National Swimming Championships

Well done to Lucy Mackay who represented South Australia in the National Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast last week. Lucy competed in four events, making three finals and recording personal bests across all races!

50m Butterfly – made the final, finishing in 6th place

100m Butterfly – made the final, finishing in 6th place

50m Freestyle – finished in 12th place

100m Freestyle – made the final (by 0.01 seconds!), finishing in 8th place

Lucy mentioned that a quote from Australian Olympic swimming star Emma McKeon has helped her settle the nerves before big races.

Emma McKeon on handling pressure:

“I do get really nervous before races but I’m now at a point where I love that feeling. I kind of see the nerves as bits of energy running through my body that I’ll use in my race. And see it as proof that I care about what I’m about to do and that I’ve worked hard for it.”

State Netball

Congratulations to Alyssa Reed who has been selected for the 12 years and under State Netball Team. Over 250 girls from all over South Australia went through a lengthy trial process last term with selection finalised just prior to the July holidays. The team will compete in the School Sport Australia National Championships in Melbourne from September 7-13.

State Football

Good luck to Mia Frearson-Lea who is off to Geelong this Saturday to represent South Australia in the School Sport Australia 12 years and under AFLW Championships.

Aerobics

Good luck to our aerobics teams who are competing in the Blitz It competition this Saturday afternoon at Golden Grove.

School Netball

Our teams were back in action last Saturday. Hopefully the coldest and wettest weekends are behind us, and we can start to see some sunshine!

Special mention to our Year 5 Gold team who broke through for their first win of the season in Sub Junior 7. The team has gone close on a number of occasions with one drawn match and three games lost by a single goal. They have been competitive every week but hadn’t quite nailed that breakthrough win.

At 3/4 time it was looking like a similar story with us down 5-7, having played really well but staring down the barrel of another narrow loss. In the last quarter, we truly clicked into gear. Ella and Hattie picked up a number of intercepts in defense; Jamie, Scarlett and Abigail got the ball moving through the midcourt; shooters Sofia and Yashi were on fire. We dominated the quarter and ran out winners 10-8.

Year 3 Hockey

Well done to our Year 3 hockey team who had a great introduction to the sport in Term 2. We fought hard against some older opponents, and it was great to see our skills and teamwork develop throughout the term. Thank you to Fenella and Avril for looking after the team!

Soccer

Our teams were back in action at training this week and are looking forward to their matches resuming this Friday.

We also had a number of students trial for the East Adelaide SAPSASA soccer team recently. Over 40 girls from across the district trialled and well done to Eva Sarunic and Chelsea Gupelle who both made it through to the final stage.

This week we learned that Chelsea has been selected in the final team for the State Carnival. Congratulations, Chelsea! She will represent the East Adelaide SAPSASA district from August 19-21.

Athletics

The junior school Little Athletics program will commence in Week 5 this term. Sessions are held on Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00pm and are available for students in Years 3-6. The program runs for 7 weeks, finishing with the LORETOlympics early in Term 4. It is not too late to register – contact Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

Summer Sport

Registrations for Term 4 sport will open midway through Term 3. The sports available in Term 4 are basketball, cricket, summer netball, tennis, touch football and volleyball.

There will also be a Come-and-Try Rowing Program available for Year 6 students: complete the Come and Try form here

Performing Arts

Year 8 student Cleo Murray, and old scholar Antonia Mazzone (’23) have both spent the school holidays travelling through Europe with the Young Adelaide Voices choir. A significant event for the group during this tour was to compete in the International Choir Festival in Provence, French Riviera, where the choristers have achieved some outstanding results. Notably, the choir came first in the ‘Youth’ category with the highest score in the history of the competition. The choir also achieved 2nd place in the ‘Sacred Music’ category, 3rd in ‘Folk Music’ category and they came 2nd place in the Grand Prix with only 0.8 points behind 1st. The group also won the ‘Most Creative Program’ award. To be competing on the world stage and achieving such amazing results is an incredible accomplishment for the Young Adelaide Voices choir and our Loreto girls. Well done Cleo and Antonia!

Faith Thien competed in the Grade 6 Piano Solo at Adelaide Eisteddfod and got an honourable mention. Congratulations, Faith!

Recently Year 12 student Laura Fitzgerald received an A+ for her Grade 7 AMEB piano exam. Congratulations, Laura!

Last month, a number of Loreto students participated at the inaugural Percussion division of the Adelaide Eisteddfod. Harper Burrage, Nikki Curin and Gazelle Chu competed in the drum kit grade 1 or 2 category. Congratulations to Gazelle Chu who received 3rd prize. Well done to all the girls!

It is an incredible accolade for year 12 student Molly Silvy who has been accepted into the annual Class of Cabaret program run by the Adelaide Festival Centre. The program is part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and also facilitates a 20-credit SACE subject.

Molly successfully auditioned from a shortlist of approximately 80 students from all over the state and was one of only 16 applicants to be awarded a position in the program. The program provides mentorship by industry professionals and bridges the gap to becoming a professional artist. It really was an amazing opportunity for Molly as she is actively pursuing career in the performing. Later this year, Molly will also audition to study at the Elder Conservatorium of Music (Adelaide Uni) with the aim to attain a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies.

The culmination of the Class of Cabaret program is a performance which took place on Saturday 22 June in the Space Theatre - Adelaide Festival Centre. This performance was one of the final events as part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. A great summary of the program has been created as a Behind The News item by the ABC. A link to this video can be found here: Class of Cabaret - Behind The News (abc.net.au)

And if this wasn’t enough to keep Molly busy in the performing arts, she has been busy taking to the stage in the Prince Alfred College Musical production of Urinetown along with Loreto student, Olivia Clemente. Congratulations, Molly!

Mia Luppino sat the AMEB Grade 5 Rockschool exam on the weekend and they've already uploaded her assessment report. She did very well, scoring 93/100 - distinction. Well done, Mia!
