Grade Preps have continued with their topic of Describing Myself/About Me, for describing your appearance. New signs include: My hair, curly, wavy, straight, long, short, fringe, colour, black, red, orange, brown and blonde, as well as my eyes, brown, blue, green and hazel (hazel is fingerspelled.)

The Preps have enjoyed a hair-cutting papercraft activity and created some self-portraits to practise signing their eye colour, hair style and colour. (See the pics below of some of the papercraft haircuts and styles from Prep Floyd!)

Preps have also practised signing “How old are you?” in Auslan by touching their nose, and replying with their age also by touching their nose to sign the number for “I am ___ years old!!” Some clever Preps have even applied their new Auslan skills out in the playground signing to ask Mrs Riordan on yard duty: “How old are you?!!!!” I may regret teaching them how to sign this in Auslan now!!! Haha - Cheeky Preps! 😊

Grade 1-2s have continued with their topic of Auslan signs for People. They have been building on their repertoire of signs for People by practising signs we have learned previously for Describing Myself (as per the Prep list above) and then applying them to sentences, to now be able to describe other people.

The Grade 1-2s have enjoyed creating a WHO AM I? Profile of a student in their class or a teacher in the school to sign clues for their peers to guess who their person is! They have also enjoyed playing some rounds of Who am I? using the Auslan gameboards to sign the appearance of characters on the board and guess who their partner’s person is!

The Grade 3-4 students have been using the signs for: start/begin, before and after in context, signing about Australia’s Seasons including the Wet and Dry Seasons of the Top End, the Days of the Week, and Months of the Year. The Grade 3-4s have now learned the signs for invite/invitation and party. They are really enjoying designing a Birthday Invitation for their next Birthday to apply their knowledge of these signs, the Days of the Week and Months of the Year, to be able to sign a party invitation to a friend.

In revising the definitions of HOLM + NMF, the Grade 5-6s completed either a PowerPoint or a Cube net to teach others about these concepts. They have been learning some new Handshapes in the Auslan language that help us to sign more accurately. They have revised 6 Handshapes previously learned including: Flat, Good, Spread, Point, Hook, and Ball/Claw. They have learned 6 new Handshapes: Wish, Key/Soon, Gun, Bad, Letter C, and Flick. The grade 5-6s have enjoyed a challenge for Gu-Gu stickers to come up with 2 signs we already know that use each of these Handshapes.

Sandhurst Division Football

Well done to both or Senior Boys and Girls Football teams who represented the school last week.

The Girls team had a particularly successful day - winning 3 games, drawing 2 and losing 1. Their only loss for the day came against eventual competition winners – St Therese’s.  For all of the girls, this was the first time they have played competitive football and they were able to pick up the rules and pace of the game very quickly (highlighted by some ferocious talking). It was a pleasure to coach such an enthusiastic and well behaved group of girls – well done!

The Boys team also had a successful day, winning 6 of their 8 games in what proved to be a very strong competition. One of their only losses for the day came against the eventual competition winners – Maiden Gully with a goal late in the game. The boys displayed fantastic teamwork and attack on the ball all day and should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mr Greer and Rick Coburn for coaching this team.

LCM Region Soccer

Well done to our Girls Soccer team who represented the school today at the Loddon, Campaspe and Mallee Soccer Championships in Swan Hill. The standard of soccer was excellent and or girls were extremely competitive in all of their games. They had an amazing win against St Mary's Swan Hill (4-0) and 2 losses to the eventual finalists – Winters Flat and Echuca East.

I would like to commend all of the players for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day – demonstrating great sportsmanship, enthusiasm and skill. They have made the school very proud. I would particularly like to thank Michelle ‘Billsy’ Maher for coaching the girls.
