Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page
In Reading, over Weeks 5 & 6 we will continue reading our class novel 'Boy Overboard'. Students will explore a range of vocabulary along with some figurative language in the next chapters.
In Writing, students have enjoyed finalising their narrative pieces they have been working so hard on over the last few weeks. They completed a Cold Write today and were able to showcase all they have learned. We will be moving on to Poetry for Weeks 5 and 6.
In Mathematics, our weeks are broken into 2 sections. On Mondays and Fridays we focus on an Applied area of Mathematics and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, our students move into 'fluid groups' to develop their Mathematical understanding, at their individual point of need in the curriculum.
Students had a lot of fun recently competing in our 'Maths Mini Olympics'. Students were grouped in different countries and competed in a variety of fun activities, based around measurement. Some of these activities were - javelin straw throw, paper plate discus and giant step. In Week 5 students will finish working on the topic of Measurement and in Week 6 we will start looking at Money and Financial Mathematics.
In Topic, students explored what preferential voting is and completed some research about some past Australian leaders. We were surprised to find who was Prime Minister of Australia, all the way back when Mr Mac was born. Over the next fortnight, students will learn about laws and debating.
In STEAM, our Grade 5s have enjoyed experimenting with our new equipment by creating different kinds of circuits with light globes, fans, motors and buzzers. They will continue to explore a variety of circuits over the coming weeks. Our Grade 6 students have been working on creating a bot to include gears, which they will then develop into their battle bots.
Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp
The event for Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp has now been released on Compass for families to provide permission and payment. The camp will take place from Wednesday, 11th September, until Friday, 13th September. In the coming weeks, you will receive further information about the camp.
To assist with planning, it would be great if you could let your child’s teacher know if your child will not be attending this camp.
We will be holding an information night on Tuesday 13th of August from 5.15 - 6pm. This is a chance to find out a little bit more about the camp and ask any questions you might have.
