Sports Update

New England Primary School Cup - Futsal

Friday the 13th September was spent playing Futsal for 12 of our Stage 2 and 3 soccer students. For those who do not know what Futsal is, it is 5 a side indoor soccer. There are no off side rules and it is a fast paced fun sport. For some of our students, it was the first time they had played this sport, and based on the smiles on their faces, I think they will make a return to the game.

Our team consisted of Atticus Zietek, Emily Halloran, Kash McPhillips, Karter Jones, Chase Gelhaar, Will Grimmond, Harley McPhillips, Ivy Watson, Ruby Kneipp, Caitlin Kneipp, Isobel Brummell and Brooke Halloran. We saw some very fancy footwork, skilful defence and excellent sportsmanship by these students and we commend them on their efforts for the day. They missed making the final by one point!

This is the first time this school competition has run in our area, and based on the success of the day, it will make a return. There is a new season of Futsal kicking off on the 8th of October in Glen Innes. If you are interested, jump on the Glen Innes Futsal Facebook page for more information.

Polding Athletics

Charlotte Neville and Brooke Graham competed at the Polding Athletics event in Glendale on Friday the 13th September. These girls demonstrated excellent talent in their events. Charlotte ran in the long distance running events where she placed 5th in the Junior girls 800m and ran a PB! She also placed 11th in the 1500m.  Brooke competed in the Shot Put where she placed 2nd with a 59cm PB and Discus where she didn’t end up with the throw she was hoping for.

Well done to both these girls and we congratulate Brooke who will now be competing at the NSW PSSA Athletics in Sydney on the 23rd October!

Netball - Regional Finals Tamworth

On Wednesday the 25th September our Blue Stage 3 Netball team travelled to Tamworth for the Primary Schools Cup Regional Finals. The team consisted of Zoe McAllister, Harriet van der Waal, April Collins, Andy Watson, Sam Barratt, Jimmy Chard, Claire Bailey, Josh Pietsch, Matt Pietsch and Rosemary Wright.

St Joseph’s played against, St Joseph’s Walgett, Holy Trinity Inverell, Coonabarabran Public School and Quirindi Public School. Windy conditions played havoc for our shooters and kept our scores low for the day. We saw excellent defence from Andy, Zoe, Jimmy and Harriet. Our midcourt consisting of Jimmy, Rose, Matt, Josh and April saw many impressive intercepts and fast passing. Claire worked her way around the goal circle to gain great placement for shots, well supported by Sam, Zoe, Andy and April.

St Joseph’s placed 3rd in Pool A. They then had to play in the semi final against 4th place in Pool B. Unfortunately they went down by one goal which meant the day of netball was over for our team.

We commend these students for their excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. They were extremely supportive of each other and took on board the very experienced advice from supercoach Kristen Bailey. We thank Kristen for all the time she has dedicated to prepare this team. Helen Smith was our designated umpire for the day, and we also thank her for giving up her day for our school.

Thank you to the parents for transporting their child to this carnival and supporting our team. It was a very enjoyable day for all of us! We look forward to doing it all again next year.

Gala Day - Tamworth

Unfortunately, due to forecast rain, the Gala Day which was meant to be held yesterday, Thursday the 26th September, was cancelled. We appreciate all the organisation that goes into this event from all levels and we understand that this decision was not made lightly. Due to a busy Term 4 for all schools in the Diocese, this event will not be held again this year. After waking up in Tamworth on Thursday morning with consistent sprinkling of rain, the correct decision was made. It would have been a long and wet day for all of us.

Diocesan Cricket Trials

We wish Angus Falconer, Matt Pietsch, Josh Pietsch and Claire Bailey all the best as they participate in the Diocesan Cricket Trials on Friday 18th October in Moree.

Netball Clinics for Sport

Today is our last netball session with Pia Thornett. We have had 5 weeks of quality skills, drills and games taught to our students by Pia and we thank her for her time and professionalism. Our students have had a blast with Pia.
