In the Kitchen with Chris

The dishes we made last week in 456H cooking were so successful we made them again with 456JC.  Our focus this term is on making different types of pasta and seeing how easy fresh pasta is to make and how delicious freshly made pasta is.

We made Home- made Orecchiette with Tomato Sugo of the Imagination, Orecchiette with Parsley Pesto and Rosemary Focaccia and also invented a vegan Parsley Pumpkin Pesto which was delicious.

From the garden we used Tuscan Kale, Silverbeet, Celery, Parsley, Mint, Oregano , Garlic and Tomato Passata and Pumpkin Puree (from the freezer).

Jess and Alannah’s  group made the Tomato Sugo of the Imagination, and showed great skills chopping and slicing the onions and garlic and washing and chopping the greens and herbs and cooking them with the tomato passata.  The herbs and spices they used gave it a delicious vegetable and herb flavour.

Angel, Dante and their team made Parsley Pesto using parsley and garlic, they separated the parsley leaves and chopped them finely, then everyone had a turn pounding the salt and garlic, sunflower kernels and parsley to a paste in the mortar and pestle. It took a while but it was worth their effort.  Anais, Beatrix and their team made Pumpkin and Parsley Pesto by chopping the garlic and parsley by hand and then using the food processor to make the fine paste, then added the pumpkin puree to make the Parsley Pumpkin Pesto.

Tahj and Lenny did a great job measuring the ingredients for the pasta dough and then mixing it in the food processer.  We all then had fun making the  Orecchiette (Little Ears) Pasta.  Everyone showed  their measuring skill, rolling out and cutting the dough into 1cm pieces.  We then used the end of a spoon to shape each piece of pasta into the Orecchiette (little ears).  It was then Tahj and Lenny’s job to cook the Orecchiette perfectly. Levi, Sophia and Sasha mixed, kneaded and shaped the dough to make the delicious, golden Rosemary Focaccia.

Everyone enjoyed the meal and then did an amazing job cleaning the kitchen and washing and putting away the dishes. Well done everyone!
