The Journey of People, Cultures, and Societies in Shaping Nations
This term, our Year 6 students will be exploring the fascinating topic of immigration and its role in shaping Australia’s identity, diversity, and society. Through our Inquiry unit, students will investigate why people migrate, the challenges and opportunities they face, and the significant contributions immigrants have made to Australia.
Students will examine historical and modern migration stories, including the impacts of policies such as the White Australia Policy and post-WWII migration. They’ll also reflect on how immigration has affected Indigenous communities and learn from stories of resilience and strength.
Using a range of digital and historical sources, students will research and present immigration timelines, conduct interviews, and create video reflections. They'll develop persuasive and informative texts, engage in meaningful discussions, and map migration journeys to build their understanding of intercultural experiences and global
interconnections.
By the end of the term, students will not only have a deeper appreciation for Australia’s multicultural society but also a stronger understanding of how diverse stories contribute to our shared national identity.
We’re excited to see the empathy, curiosity, and critical thinking that this unit will inspire in our learners!
