Number & Algebra   I   Measurement & Geometry   I   Statistics & Probability

This term in Mathematics, Year 6 students will explore a rich and engaging unit centred on fractions, with strong connections to measurement, data, probability, and real-life applications. Students will begin by representing, comparing, and simplifying fractions, and making links between mixed and improper forms. They'll deepen their understanding of value by working with fractions in a variety of contexts, including describing and interpreting data.

As students grow in confidence, they’ll apply their knowledge to solve problems involving adding and subtracting fractions, including those embedded in real-world, worded scenarios. They’ll also explore the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages, learning how to calculate parts of a whole in practical situations.

Building on this, students will delve into probability, using fractions, decimals, and percentages to describe the likelihood of events. They will conduct experiments, calculate expected outcomes, and solve worded chance-based problems.

Toward the end of the term, students will consolidate their learning through tasks involving area and perimeter, discount calculations, and powers of 10 and ratio.

This term offers a fantastic opportunity for students to build flexible thinking, problem-solving strategies, and confidence in using mathematics in meaningful, real-world ways.
