Main Campus - Year 4
It is hard to believe we are already in week 4 of our third term! There have been lots of exciting things happening for the Carlsruhe unit including being filmed for a television show, sharing our sustainability flipbooks with Year 3, more sessions as part of our activities cycle, assembly performances and our very own nod to the Olympics in the form of the Maths Olympics and Family Maths night.
As part of our work for Inquiry, we have been learning about the different biomes around the globe, from the icy poles to the tropical rainforests and all that’s in between. We have been working together in collaborative groups to research and write about the countries on the African and South American continents that share the same lines of latitude as Australia, and the biomes that exist within these lines of latitude. This will enable us to look at our place in the world, comparing the biomes we are familiar with here in Australia, to those located on these other continents. The children have been looking forward to starting their class encyclopedia projects, and have so far enjoyed sharing interesting facts they have discovered and marveling at the variety of fauna and flora found here on our amazing planet!
Last week many of the children were particularly excited to be a part of the weekly assembly. The students proudly performed a beautiful version of the classic ‘My Heart Will Go On’ by Celine Dion using the ocarinas, which they had been working on during their Music lessons. Special thanks to Mr Bromley, our amazing music teacher who put it all together so perfectly.
We have also been avidly following the Olympic events in Paris over the past few weeks within our classrooms. We have looked at the various countries competing, their flags, the medals tally boards to see the numbers of medals being won each day, as well as participating in our own opening ceremony to start our biennial Maths Olympics day. After a fun-filled, action-packed day competing in their house teams, it was great to round it off with an exciting night of number games and problem-solving activities. It was simply wonderful to see so many of you there, celebrating our learning and partaking in the fantastic activities with the children. We hope you will be able to use some of the resources compiled and have fun recreating these activities with your children at home.
