Maths over the holidays

With holidays just around the corner, here are some fun mathematical activities to complete at home to link classroom learning to real life scenarios:

  • Adding totals and calculating change at the shops
  • Pay with cash and discuss Australian currency
  • Tell the time on analogue and digital clocks
  • Create a timetable or schedule for your daily activities

You can also play some Mathematical games as a family. 

Card Wars

There are many ways to play this card game, below are some fun ways to play with your game. 

Addition

Place the pile of cards (A-10) face up between two players. Flip over two cards and add the total together. The highest total collects the cards from both players. The player with the most cards at the end wins that round. 

Subtraction

Place the pile of cards (A-10) face up between two players. Flip over two cards to make a two digit number. Flip over a third card to subtract from the two digit number and find the answer. Player with the smallest number wins that round and collects the cards from both players. The player with the most cards at the end wins that round. 

Place Value

Place the pile of cards (A-10) face up between two players. Flip over cards and make a 2, 3, 4 digit number. rearrange cards to make the largest or smallest number. Place cards on the bottom of the pile. Play 10 rounds.

Strikes: 

How to play:

  1. Draw up a scorecard with the numbers from 3 – 18 like below.
  2. Roll three dice and add the total. 
  3. Player who calculates the total crosses off the corresponding number on the scorecard.  
  4. If the number has already been crossed off that player will receive a strike.
  5. Three strikes and the player is out. 

 

 

 

Challenge: Use addition, subtraction, division and multiplication with the three numbers. 

Further Challenge: Using BIDMAS (order of operations) with the three numbers.

Holidays already?  It only seems like last week that we were getting settled into a new term of learning.  It has been wonderful to see staff and students utilising the new Literacy Instructional Models across the school.  The skills and knowledge that the students have demonstrated across the term are just fantastic. With holidays quickly approaching you might be wondering how to support your child with literacy at home?  Well, here are some ideas:

  • Read ‘good-fit’ books together 
  • Write journal entries about your holiday adventures
  • Engage in day-to-day texts (newspapers, instructions, recipes, signs, blogs)
  • Write reviews for books, shows or movies
  • Play word-related games (Wordle, Boggle, Scrabble, etc)
  • Go for a family adventure that stimulates some oral language
