Year 10 Italian

Italian Club of WA- Ricordi d’infanzia

(CHILDHOOD MEMORIES)

Year 10 Excursion

On Friday 13 June, Year 10 Italian students enjoyed a cultural and linguistic immersion at the Italian Club of WA. The excursion was a highlight of Term Two’s Unit 1 focus on ‘Childhood memories – Ricordi d’infanzia’.

As students entered the venue, The Italian Club of WA, which was established in 1934 by a group of Italian migrants, they were greeted by the warm and lively atmosphere of Italians spending their day together—playing cards, chatting, and sharing stories—just like scenes you’d find in the piazzas and streets of Italy. The experience added to the sense of authenticity and connection to Italian culture.

Students had the valuable opportunity to interview an Italo-Australian resident ‘Dino’ in Italian about his childhood memories and his journey from Italy to Australia, gaining real-world experience in language use and cultural exchange. They also shared an authentic Italian lunch, enjoying a delicious spread of woodfired pizzas and traditional pasta dishes.

Throughout the immersion, students were respectful, enthusiastic, and fully engaged, making the most of this enriching experience that brought their classroom learning to life.

Concluding Unit 1- Childhood memories at the end of Semester 1, the students will enjoy a traditional competition of the game of RUZZOLA. This game dates to the Etruscan era, during medieval times. The game traditionally consists of throwing a wheel of parmesan cheese along a path, seeing who can launch it the furthest to become the RUZZOLA champion, initiating the RUZZOLA CUP at Mazenod College! No Parmesan cheese wheel will be harmed during this experience!
