Gospel Reflection

Gospel from Pentecost, 8 June - John 14:15-16, 23-26 (JB)

Jesus said to his disciples

'If you love me you will keep my commandments.

I shall ask the Father

and he will give you another Advocate

to be with you for ever.

'If anyone loves me he will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we shall come to him

and make our home with him.

Those who do not love me do not keep my words.

And my word is not my own;

it is the word of the one who sent me.

I have said these things to you

while still with you;

but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything

and remind you of all I have said to you.'

Sunday marked the feast of Pentecost with the Holy Spirit bestowed on the disciples. Strengthened by gifts of the Spirit, the early Christians were empowered to go out into the world and share the good news of God's love through Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit in the Gospel is also called the Advocate – one who teaches. This Pentecost, Pope Leo XIV reminds we are on a journey. The Pope explains that this journey unites us to all of humanity, with the Holy Spirit teaching us to walk in unity, in contrast to the violence and division that marks our world. We are called to walk alongside each other and to walk in peace.

In these days immediately after the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, we recall the founder’s hope for a community centred around a spirituality of the heart. Pope Francis focussed his last encyclical, Dilexit Nos, on the heart, writing that “The heart is the basis for any sound life project; nothing worthwhile can be undertaken apart from the heart.”

And so we pray:

+ Loving God,

Through your son Jesus you sent the gift of your Spirit,

To bring about your reign of peace.

May the Holy Spirit breath its strength into our lives,

And teach us its ways of wisdom, mercy and justice.

May we strive to have hearts united with Christ.

May we be peacemakers.

Mary our good mother – pray for us

St Marcellin Champagnat – pray for us

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop – pray for us

And let us always remember – to pray for one another

Amen.+

Champagnat Mass Reflection

Each year our College celebrates St Marcellin Champagnat’s Feast Day on 6th June with other Marist schools and communities around the world. Each year we are reminded why this celebration matters, not only as an opportunity to reflect on our foundations, but to express what it means today, to live with simplicity, humility and modesty as part of a larger Marist family. Our Mass was a joyful occasion, with scripture, symbol and song to guide us. It was a pleasure to welcome several Marist Brothers, Fr Anthony from the local St John’s Wood/The Gap Parish, and other special guests to the Mass. The Champagnat Awards allowed us to put the spotlight on three worthy individuals within the community, staff and student body who absolutely exemplify the qualities of Marcellin: Dr Peter Norris (community member), Mrs Rhonda Carson (staff member) and George Kettle (student) are Marist people who are Faithful, Persistent, Caring, Generous, Encouraging, Trusting, Hardworking and Respectful. We congratulate each of them for being this year’s recipients of the Champagnat Awards.

Thanks must go to the wonderful musicians whose talents ensured our Mass was a fitting way to celebrate. Lastly, to our very own Fr ‘Alatini Kolofo'ou, who led the Mass with dignity and reverent joy; we are very grateful.

The day was rounded out with lunch provided by the hardworking kitchen and services crew and with Theatre Sports and the Push-Up Challenge.

Green Ash Farewells Gavin and Sawyer Snyder

Two dedicated and hard working Green Ash boys leave us at the end of the term to move with their family to Canada. These brothers have made a huge contribution to GreenAsh for the past two years, working hard weeding and planting in the creek behind the pool. Green Ash and the Mission team will miss your commitment to Greenash. Thanks Gavin and Sawyer Snyder. All the best in Canada!

Environment Group Connect Afternoon Reflection

Last Friday, our Environment Group hosted an afternoon to connect current and hopeful future members of the Environment Group. The event started with some games on the oval, and fittingly, for the Environment Group, the sky really put a show. Luckily however, we were still able to use the telescope to take a closer look at the Moon through the clouds and later, played an environmental trivia game. After a BBQ dinner, we then bunkered down for the main event – a nighttime viewing of The Wild Robot. It was a fun event which brought together boys from all different year groups and hopefully one that we will do again.

A special thank you to Mikael Pitot and Elizabeth in helping to run the event, and also to our Year 12 volunteers – Braidyn Polich, Francis Schutt, Lachlan Vink, Cameron McPhee and Matthew L’Enfant – for their enthusiasm.

This Thursday, our Environment Group will be helping out Green Thumbs again, over in the old Primary. All students are welcome at the start of Break 1.
