Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

What a great week we had last week. We kicked it off by winning the double in the AIC cross country, taking out both the primary and secondary championships at Curlew last Wednesday. On the weekend we won the bulk of the matches in football and rugby, with both teams in equal first place going into Round 7 at Padua.

On Saturday the weather was kinder than it has been, and we enjoyed a wonderful day of football and rugby at Villanova. Marist dominated the day winning 13 and losing 9 in rugby and winning 21 and losing 4 in football. The 1st XI drew 1-all and remain in equal first place with St Patrick’s, with Padua 1 point behind. In rugby the 1st XV won 47-12 to remain undefeated in first place, equal with Padua.

Well done to our Cross Country team who won the Primary and the Secondary AIC championships last Wednesday at Curlew Park. The commitment, hard work, and team first mentality of the whole squad proved our strength as Marist were successful in the Year 6, 12 years, 13 years, 14 years and Opens as well as second in Year 5, and 16 years and third in 15 years. It was an outstanding effort from the entire team who should be very proud of their efforts. The commitment to training and hard work was evident and ultimately rewarded on the day. Thank you to Coordinator Mr Matthew Millward, Assistant Coordinator Mr Marcus Schrader, Head of Sport- Primary Mr John Lambourne, Head Coach (Old Boy) Thomas Prole and supervisors Alan Moran, Asher Parkin, Brendan Jansons, Brendan Saunders, Jacob Keogh, Matt Pimm, Sasha Sofronoff and Ben Adams.

Age Champions:

12 Years - Owen Ambrose

13 Years - Finn Beaver

14 Years - Ronan Sadminenko

15 Years - Xavier Hunter

16 Years - Harry Prole

Opens - Zac Milligan

As we head into the last weekend of the Term 2 sports the College acknowledges and thanks the Year 12 boys for their efforts over the years, many of whom have played year on year since Year 5. We wish you all the very best for your final matches this weekend in the blue and gold. We hope that you engage with the Old Boys and return to cheer on your old school in the future. No doubt the tries will get bigger and the goals more spectacular as the years go by, but hopefully the memories never fade.

This weekend sees us take on Padua College for the final round of the season. This is their big day for Back to Banyo. With both sports premierships on the line, it is sure to be a huge day.

With our Term 2 sports coming to an end this weekend our attention moves to our Term 3 sports with basketball, rugby league, tennis, hockey and track and field starting very soon. Please make sure you have registered to play. Trial details will become available on the College Orbit App over the coming days.

Marist Rugby Union | Year Level Coordinators

As we move into the last game of the AIC Rugby Union season, clear communication remains essential for effective planning and team selection. We want to make sure every student who is available for selection is playing this weekend.

We ask that all families continue to communicate directly with the relevant year level coordinator. Please contact your coordinator for all non-selection matters, including lateness, unavailability, and game or training timings.

Senior school students are expected to take responsibility and make contact with both their coordinator and coach themselves.

Marist Rugby Union | Round 6 vs Villanova College

Officially, Round 6 was an away fixture for Marist against Villanova College at Tingalpa. However, with 25 of the 36 games played at home, the College had a buzzing atmosphere that felt every bit like a full round at Marist.

We were pleased to welcome non-AIC schools Downlands College and St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace to the College grounds. A number of three-way fixtures were organised across the day, providing not only fresh opposition and tough contests but also new experiences for the players. It was great to see the boys challenged by different schools and new faces.

With the sun shining and a full schedule of rugby on display, it was a perfect day for Marist running rugby. Thank you to all involved for helping deliver another successful round.

Marist Year 9-12 teams travelled to Tingalpa to take on Villanova College in Round 6 of the AIC Rugby competition. Having faced them in our full school trial back in late April, we knew they were playing some strong rugby and would provide quality opposition across all year levels.

Villanova was also celebrating their Old Boys Day, drawing a large and vocal crowd that added to the energy of the occasion. With music, marching bands, and a packed schedule of fixtures, it was a long and entertaining day of schoolboy rugby.

The 1st XV continued their undefeated run. Leading 19-12 at halftime, the team kicked on strongly with a dominant second half performance. Some of the catch pass and support play was excellent and ultimately led to a 47-12 victory. They have now set themselves up for a winner takes all match against Padua next weekend.

The 2nd XV played some excellent rugby and deserved their strong win, whilst the 3rd XV ended up in a draw against Villanova.

The 4th XV through to the 6th XV played in some three-way contests against Gregory Terrace and Downlands College. It was a great way to play some quality opposition and provide the teams with some different jerseys and challenges. All teams enjoyed the hit out and it leads nicely into another new opposition this week in The Southport School.

Unfortunately, the 7th XV game was cancelled and the 8th XV travelled to Iona to play against their 7th XV. Congratulations to those boys who made the trip across the river for an early morning fixture and came away with a win.

Congratulations to all Opens players and coaches for another good week of rugby. One more round to go and we wish everyone, and our Year 12 students in particular, a great finish to the season.

Football

Football Coordinator – Blair Whitlock

Round 6 vs Villanova College

Round 6 saw the junior years (5-8) playing at Ashgrove and the senior years (9-12) out at Tingalpa for fixtures against Villanova College. Conditions were perfect for Football and it was a brilliant day on the whole with many teams putting in their strongest performances of the season. Nine of the 12 aggregate teams (7A/B, 8A/B, 9A/B, 10A/B, 4th XI, 3rd XI, 2nd XI and 1st XI) came away with victories which puts Marist in 2nd place on the overall aggregate heading into round seven against Padua College who are currently in 3rd.

Congratulations to the following teams who remain undefeated after six competitive rounds of Football:

1st XI; 5th XI; 6th XI; 10B; 10C; 8A; 7D; 6A; 6C Blue; 6C Gold; 6D; 5B.

Best of luck to all teams heading into their final week of training and matches this weekend.

Round 7 vs Padua College

The final round of AIC Football sees us heading out to Banyo on what will be Padua College Old Boys Day. With the 1st XI and 1st XV premierships on the line it promises to be a brilliant day of sport, and your support would be greatly appreciated! The 1st XI are an 11:00am KO and the 1st XV are a 3:15pm KO out at Banyo. Thirty-five out of 40 Football matches are being played at either Padua’s Banyo Playing Fields or the Nudgee Recreation Reserve which are right next to each other so this weekend is the one to stick around and support your mates.

Football – Training Schedules

The Football training schedule will be posted weekly on the Orbit App for all parents to see. Now that the majority of public holidays / student free days have occurred there will be very little movement in training days (if any) for the vast majority of Football teams. If you are unable to make your training or game, please let your year level coordinator know so they can advise the coaching staff:

Year 5 Coordinator – Mr Michael Jones (jonesmi@marash.qld.edu.au)

Year 6 Coordinator – Mrs Rachelle Garton (gartonr@marash.qld.edu.au)

Year 7 Coordinator – Mr Gareth Kolkenbeck-Ruh (kolkenbeckruhg@marash.qld.edu.au)

Football Training | Wet Weather Plan

Football training will rarely be called off due to bad weather. If rain is forecast, students are asked to place their school bags and formal hats under cover.

Parents dropping students at Des Connor Fields are asked to use the canteen end, where the gear shed and canteen balcony provide shelter. The shed on Cameron Oval provides shelter for teams training there.

Social Media

The marketing and photography team do an amazing job of capturing the boys games where possible each weekend. Please head over to the Marist College Sport Instagram page to see photos from the weekends matches as well as our Team and Coaches of the Week!  @marist_ashgrove_sports.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

Chasing Dreams, Winning Together

Like many tennis fans around the world, I stayed up to watch one of the most anticipated Grand Slam finals in years — the first ever between two players born in the 2000s. The prize? Glory, a place in history, and a cool $3 million for two weeks of brilliance.

We all dream of moments like that. If no one chased those dreams, we wouldn’t get to witness the level of talent, passion, and fight that electrifies stadiums and lights up our screens.

The match began with tennis of the highest quality — true gladiators of the sport. At 5–5 in the first set, sleep got the better of me (early AIC trials the next morning will do that). Somewhere between the rallies on TV and the fog of dreams, I saw a younger version of myself lifting the trophy at Roland Garros. For a moment, it felt real… until I woke up and realised it was time for bed.

But that dream — the one Alcaraz and Sinner chased all the way to a Grand Slam final — started somewhere just like ours: with a racquet, a court, and the will to be better.

Now, back to our courts.

I see a number of boys with real tennis talent sitting out this season. Some of them could be the difference between Marist winning the aggregate or watching another school walk away with it.

Let’s not settle for second-best.

We can’t do it without you. Talent matters — and you’ve got it. But what matters even more is stepping up for your mates, wearing the school crest with pride, and knowing you’ve given everything for something bigger than yourself.

Come play. Be a part of this. Help us make history of our own.

Super League results- Finals

What a day with some great results across our four teams fighting it out for a place in this Saturday’s Final.

Div 9 - had a close match but going down in a close one. So very proud of you boys at the way you have held your heads high and are now competing with the best. Great job Frankie, Leo and Sam.

Div 7 – Another nail biter with the scores so close is was a shame a team had to lose. Well played Jack and Jason our father and son team. So close but congrats on a steller season.

Div 3 – Are through to the final next week to play for the title. I watched some of this match and was great to see some of our emerging talent play smarter and not harder by using shot placement and tactics over sheer power every hit. Good luck Indy and Tom

Super Reserve Top Div – Are through to the final also with a great win bvy the boys to set up a show down in the final. Henry and Oscar proving to solid for their opponents and winning easily. Good luck also this weekend.

Congrats also to our super grade team who won their playoff for 5th & 6th . Great finish to their season . Well done Liam and Hamish.

Again, time is fast approaching for the cut off date for next season’s entries. Please get your entries in soon before we cut off for comp 2.
