Our Year Five student Owin achieved Black Belt (1st Poom) in Taekwondo over the weekend on 14th of December at Hall's Taekwondo Grading Day!

Owin has been training at Hall's Taekwondo with his brother Kevan and was so happy with his achievement. Well done Owin!

Owin looks forward to continuing his training specialising in Poomsae and becoming an instructor. We couldn't wait to ask him all about Taekwondo, and you can read what Owin had to say below:

How long have you been learning Taekwondo?

Three years now since 2022.

Why were you keen to start learning Taekwondo?

I started my journey to black belt a long time ago. I would enter these short sessions at celebrations and festivals and then one day three years ago my dad suggested I should work to get my black belt, and I started my journey to black belt.

How does practising Taekwondo make you feel?

Practising Taekwondo is easy but you still have to work hard and prove to the instructor that you’re ready for the next as I continue path beyond black belt.

Can you describe how you felt before grading on the weekend?

It felt stressful since it would be one of my hardest gradings and then attending the black belt graduation to break boards.

How did you feel once grading was over and you'd achieved black belt?

I was satisfied with my training but I wasn’t done yet and would continue my journey.

Has anything or anyone helped you to achieve your success?

My instructors helped reach a level I thought I could never reach, and me and my partner both kept each other going no matter what.

What's the best thing about Taekwondo?

That it teaches you not only a fighting style but also composure and keeping yourself calm while bringing the fighting spirit out of you.

Do you have any future Taekwondo goals?

Yes I will work towards improving my skills to enter championships and also achieve my 9th dan black belt just like Martin Hall.

What advice would you give to any other students who are keen to learn Taekwondo?

You need to work hard not only in the moments that you can stand out, but also in the times that you aren’t you have to train and show that you are already a black belt. Even from the start.

Such a terrific effort Owin! Congratulations on achieving black belt and thank you for sharing your story with us!
